I came down to my pc and hit space bar to wake it from sleep mode. As soon as I did that I heard thump like noise that sounded like some electricity failure. I disconnected the power and everything else. Took out the power supply and it smelled like some electric burnout. So I figured getting a new powersupply would fix the problem. Computer still does not turn on.
I opened the case to look inside. A blue light is on when I turn the powersupply on. This light is on the motherboard. When I try to turn the pc on nothing happens except a yellow/amber light comes on. I hope that every part in my pc is not fried.
Too long?
Pc does not turn on. Bought a new powersupply. Blue light on motherboard but a yellow light comes on after I hit the power switch to turn it on. Thanks for any help.
it would help to know what your motherboard was
Well I don't remember what my motherboard is. I'll have to look. Not sure how to tell I used to get all my pc specs from a program
Most motherboards have a name on them near the PCI slots or CPU socket.
Does the PC beep at all when you try to boot? You say it doesn't turn on, but does it respond at all (aside from the board lights) when you try to turn it on? Do Fans spin momentarily for instance?
As others have said, knowing the motherboard would help the most. But considering the PSU is plugged directly into the Mobo and the machine won't start up; Unless it's beeping it is likely a fried motherboard. But that's just my guess sitting at a PC X amount of miles away.

There is no beep, it does not turn on and the fans do no spin. :( My computer has never beeped while turning it on ever since I got new parts.
I took a guess at my motherboard name and found the one I have.

Are all cables firmly connected? Some cables are really tight and must be pushed in more.
Does your mobo have the 2 character led status display?
Exploding PSUs damaging other components are hit and miss. It entirely depends on what burns inside the PSU as to whether it will send nasty voltage spikes to components it powers. If it was some capacitors that popped, then your stuff is likely fine. But if it was a mosfet, all bets are off. Since the PSU shorted itself out, you can open it up if you still have it and look for burned parts.
But make sure you have all power cables from the new PSU plugged in properly. You need the large rectangular ATX connector, as well as the small 4 pin square CPU power connector (sometimes it's 8 pins on newer boards arranged in a rectangle.)
