• Microsoft denies letting GFWL die, says they still support the core PC gamer with ‘Age of Empires On
As we reported in September, Xbox Live will be a major part of Windows 8. Despite concerns that PC gamers are being pushed to the sidelines in favour of the console service, this has the potential to be a very good thing. After all, well-integrated support for games could do away with the need for Games for Windows Live, whose primary purpose seems to be to inject a strain of Kafka-esque absurdity into our hobby. NeoGamr recently asked Microsoft whether GfWL would be receiving the axe with the launch of Windows 8, and the answer, emphatically, is no. “Microsoft continues to support the Games for Windows platform” their response reads, “but we are making new investments in Metro style games. For the core PC gamer we launched ‘Age of Empires Online’ last year and ‘Microsoft Flight’ on February 29.” This comes as gamers rally to prevent the upcoming Dark Souls PC from using the service. Its unpopularity comes from its tendency to foist multiple updates on players and its occasional ability to break games entirely. Microsoft seem keen to reassure us that they’re still producing PC-exclusive games, but it’s only by solving the well-documented issues with their online gaming service that they’re going to win back the support of players. I recently got trapped in a cycle of broken GfWL updates while trying to play the Mortal Kombat Kollection, a curse I only broke when I tempted a passing stranger into taking my place. Sometimes, when it’s very quiet, I can still hear the sound of distant yelling coming from my Steam library.
http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/04/18/microsoft-continues-to-support-games-for-windows-live/
core gamer?? Microsoft Flight?? hahahahahahaha
So who here is looking forward to Age of Empires Online guys. ..guys?
They could at least try to make it less of a nuisance. And of course, core PC gamers play AoE Online because it's such a great game and totally not p2w.
when people make mods to disable it you know its bad
doesn't help a lot both of those games are shit.
I for one wouldn't mind GFWL dying, they'd almost be doing PC gamers a favor.
Every optional .exe I need to have running in order to play a game makes me hate it slightly more. If that .exe sometimes makes messages pop up on my screen, that hate increases exponentially. If that .exe is also responsible for me not being able to edit savegames in GTA4, fuuuck that. As for Steam, I just give it an annoyed frown because otherwise it sells me $5 games and installs all my Skyrim mods.
The only .exe I like running with my game is Steam because it actually works well.
Age of Empires online is quite decent aaaaaand Well you could say that it's the only decent game it still supports :/
i dont like hearing this just as dark souls has been announced for GFWL
GFWL is an utter piece of shit of a program and a terrible service altogether. I don't mind Microsoft trying to get in to the digital distribution business, but they should at least try to do that with something better.
Good god MS, let it die. It doesn't work.
If that's what "core PC gamer" means for Microsoft, no wonder they're so out-of-phase with reality
Yeah, because dumbed-down microtransaction-riddled bastardizations of once-beloved franchises is what PC gamers crave. Also, apparently PC gamers like having their games region locked and saddled with a bloated Xbox-style interface that takes up unnecessary amounts of resources.
its an abortion. A terrible port of a shit xbox service. Murder it!
MS Flight is a sign you care about PC gamers, Microsoft? I got into the beta for that and I played it for all of....an hour. And then I got bored. I haven't touched it since. Worst part is I've been craving an arcadey-ish flight sim for years too. GFWL needs to go, and honestly MS, if you can't give us good games just don't bother at all. Let people who know what they're doing handle making PC games.
The only .exe I like running with my game is Steam because it actually works well.
I love Steam to no end, but they really should make it possible to play offline without having to be online first. Sort of defeats the purpose of having a offline mode in the first place.
Thanks to GFWL I haven't been able to play GTAIV in 2 years. Been in contact with support twice and spent countless hours of dredging the web for help.

I like how GFWL could make you speak to xbox live people but it was so primitive to what you could do, like you couldn't join a fucking party if more than 1 person were on a xbox it was stupid IMO, kill GFWL and use the win8 marketplace to sell future games with XBL like features. Developers prefer using steam now anyway so.
Oh hell yeah! Going to become a true gamer in a few hours.
Age Of Empires Online is a below average game that does absolutely shit all for the AoE series overall. Microsoft Flight is...Microsoft Flight. That 'core PC gamer' argument has very little merit.
GFWL is lame, crippled, and a broken port of XBL. I started to use it for Fallout 3 a while back, and even bought all of the DLC through it (regrettably, Operation Anchorage as well). I was on and off with it, and didn't like how the saves with my online account were separate (and hard to find) compared to the default/offline saves. After having the game uninstalled for a while (and GFWL dormant for oh so many months), I reinstalled FO3 and went through a few hours worth of trouble trying to get my GFWL account up and running again. It didn't recognize my username or password, and I went through plenty of errors and bullshit, only to find that my saves and DLC (which I opted to BACK-UP through GFWL, after uninstalling FO3 of course) were gone and apparently wiped clean off of my hard drive. I scrambled to multiple paths and tools to get the saved data back, but could not, and had been fucked by GFWL. I wasn't even able to purchase the multiple DLCs a second time, due to even more errors and run-around bullshit. This system sucks, and should either go back to the way it used to be (default multiplayer elements implemented into a game, as usual) or be put down altogether. Also, if they're going to talk about "core PC gamers", then they should at least include more than just a crumby F2P mmo abortion and... your average flight sim. Where are the RPGs? The First-Person-Shooters? The stealth games? The puzzle games?
I've had nothing but problems with GfWL, it still refuses to accept my password because it's too secure, or something (While my xbox can gladly log in with an old password, no idea wtf MS is doing there), and I loved how it would sign you out of live for having an outdated version of the game (blocking you from using your saves), but if you tried to update the game it would then fail and lock up. Steam on the other hand allows me to use a 20+ character long password, while also providing 2 factor authentication, and lets me control when games are updated (My only complaint with Steam is that I can't schedule downloads until my off peak period)
Offline mode is for when you know you're gonna lose internet. After all, steam is still a DRM of some sort.
Because we plan when we are going to lose our internet. And I've yet to see a pirated game work on Steam without it being a "non-Steam game." Requiring an online connection to play a game (obviously not talking about multiplayer) is a horrible concept.

i bought Age of Empires 3 and all its expansion packs for £0.10 from GFWL
