Children who enjoy Popeye cartoons generally eat more vegetables than those who don't watch the classic show, it has been found.
Researchers at Mahidol University in Bangkok claim the type and amount of vegetables children eat can be directly linked to TV shows they watch.
Tests on four to five-years-olds found watching Popeye scoff spinach before beating up Bluto made kids want to eat more greens.
In fact the researchers claim the twenty six children in their study - which also saw them plant seeds and cook - doubled their vegetable intake as a result.
Next up the boffins will study the impact of watching Tom and Jerry on the level of infant frying pan attacks.:irony:
Professor Chutima Sirikulchayanonta, who led the research, said vegetable intake doubled and the types of vegetables the children consumed increased from two to four.
Parents also reported their children talked about vegetables more often and were proud they had eaten them in their school lunch
She added there was no significant change in the kinds of fruit eaten by the children, but this was probably because they were already eating more fruit than vegetables at the start of the study.[/release]

Glad to see somebody is thinking of the children
This is why Popeye needs to come back.

As much as I love Popeye (he's a HUGE part of my childhood :3:), it wouldn't be the same... :/
I remember watching that show and then burrowing into my fridge for spinach.
Actually I ate more meat because of the show.
I blame the fat guy who ate Hamburgers all the time.
What was his name?
Everytime Popeye came on I would look for spinach or something but we were poor so I settled with lettuce.
I actually remember wanting spinach more, specifically because of Popeye.
But nooooo. They'd rather not air "violent" cartoon shows than having kids be healthier. Fuck you, television people.
I used to eat my spinach.
Then do the arm/leg bulgy things and go 'toot toot'.
True story.
Popeye was without a doubt a big player in reasons to eat my green vegies.

it helped alot whenever I needed to beat the living shit out of somebody

This is all I can think of when I hear popeye.
I never watched Popeye (or TV for that matter) and I always eat my vegetables.
Does this make me an aberration of some sort?
Loved that show.
For the record I watched popeye and I also eat spinach at every meal when I eat at home.
[editline]04:36AM[/editline]
write that down in your record books
I loved Popeye as much as the next kid, but I still hate vegetables... and I'm paying for it.
Wasn't that the point of the cartoon?
Didn't really do anything to me, of all vegetables, spinach is the one I hate the most.
I love Popeye, but this didn't make me eat more vegetables. Simply because my mom is and always has been a piss-poor "cook." I only started liking vegetables after my Dad started making dinner.

my mom throws everything into a pot and cooks it for 12 hours. by that time its already a sludgy amalgamation of horrible tastes. My dad is a super awesome meat chef. i love his barbecue.
Because of this show, I would ALWAYS beg my mom to buy Spinach for me.
Nah, for me, it was "The Land Before Time" making me want to eat broccoli, because broccoli looked like trees and when I ate it, I got to pretend I was a dinosaur.
I actually tried different ways of preparing spinich so that I could stand eating it because of this show. Creamed is the only one I like though.
Popeye made spinach look delicious, but I still never ate it, and still don't.
Fuckin love the show though, gonna watch it tonight when I go to bed.

That was probably a bad idea, eating more.

but it explains so much

This, it's actually why I started eating spinach.
Popeye made me a violent person. I now lash out at people who are twice my size, and who are trying to hit on my girl.
I was reading a lot of Popeye comics when I was younger but I was never attracted to vegetables more than I would be without it :colbert:
i bet the parents that wanted this banned because it was "too violent" feel like asses now
I believe Spinach became one of my favorite food after watching this show as a kid. :3:
Who would have wanted Popeye banned?
I mean, who didn't like it when they were young?
The best cartoons are the old ones, because there wasn't any of this "political correctness in children's media" bullshit. Just entertainment and occasionally some education value.
I remember some study linking Popeye to the consumption of Marijuana (or drugs, can't remember) because right after he finishes eating his Spinach, he gets a huge boost in strength and he loses all inhibitions when fighting Brutus... :/
