The lab features a clear acrylic tank about 75 feet (23 meters) long and 6.5 feet (2 meters) high. Inside, 38,000 gallons of seawater can be whipped into white-capped waves by a 1,700-horsepower fan that can create Category 5 conditions, with winds topping 157 mph.Satellite sensors have been mounted on the lab's high ceilings to look down athurricane conditions churning in the tank. This will help fine-tune satellites watching real storms, said lab director Brian Haus.
"The satellites, even though they see a really big area, they tend to be sensitive to really small things on the surface. We don't really know, when you get into extreme conditions, what the satellite is seeing - whether there's a spot reflecting off sea spray or bubbles or short waves," Haus said.
"Research"
As a Floridian this as cool as shit, I can only imagine how in depth our knowledge of hurricanes and storm systems in general will get. This means we might eventually be able to predict a Katrina level disaster, as now the uncertainty in the predicted path of a hurricane can be reduced or even eliminated (hopefully).
It's only a matter of time before we can create our own hurricane of equal magnitude but spinning the opposite direction to throw at an incoming hurricane to destroy it.
talk about a storm in a teapot
This is a supervillain origin story.

"Hurricane vs Typhoon", coming to a retail near you.

I thought about that being an application
that would be metal as shit
fighting storms with storms
the only way to kill a bad guy with a gun, is by killing him with a good guy with a gun
Someone call G.I. Joe, they have the Weather Dominator!
I can see this becoming a weapon of war if it can be practically done.

it's just a tank of water with a fan.

suppose you could make the enemy damp and lower morale
#BushCausedKatrina
It would've been cool to see a video of this lab in action.
And there's no fucking video?!
You guy's didn't even bother looking

And what are they going to do if one of these hurricanes gets loose? Irresponsible if you ask me.
But actually, that is really cool.
This is important because if we can control the weather, we could possible fix and prevent a lot of the problems we have now with climate change.

oh boy, big smart OvB's here, killing all of our joy
Only Florida Man could come up with something so diabolical.

The simple act of putting a giant fan above a swimming pool full of sea water was enough to drive Dr. Rotato mad with power!
