Chrome used to be really fast for me. Even since i switched from Windows 8 to 8.1 (complete reinstall), when i have a bunch of tabs open and then try to switch to one of the open tabs that i haven't opened before that session i'll have a white page for ~10 seconds and disk usage goes absolutely crazy:

The C drive is a 128GB Crucial M4 SSD on which chrome is installed, D and E are both 1TB Spinpoint F3's with a system managed page file on them.
After the white goes away i can switch between tabs pretty much instantly, until i either restart chrome (tabs are saved), hibernate my pc or simply don't open that tab for a while

this issue isn't present for me and i have a seagate 600 mlc ssd so im lost on why this would be happening for you[/QUOTE]
I usually have ~30 tabs open at any given time, which used to work fine before i switched to Windows 8.1
During just 'idle' usage of chrome the open files are mostly C:/$LogFile and %localappdata%/Google/Chrome/User Data/Default/*.tmp

I also noticed a lot of chrome processes will keep running after closing:

nvm the running processes, turns out there's a checkbox that keeps the background extensions running after chrome closes
