Nine Marines have been deployed to the U.S. Embassy in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, at the request of the State Department, an official said Tuesday. There was no immediate word on any specific threat to the American facility beyond the turmoil that has gripped the city and driven out former President Viktor Yanukovych. The Marines are from a unit based in Quantico, Va., that is dedicated to reinforcing security at embassies worldwide.
http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ukraine-crisis/marines-deployed-guard-u-s-embassy-kiev-n38331 Sounds like they are expecting trouble.
Better safe than sorry aside. Why would anyone go for the us embassy?
Better safe than sorry aside. Why would anyone go for the us embassy?
I think you're putting aside the very reason that they're there.
I think you're putting aside the very reason that they're there.
America really doesnt have much to do with current events though.
America really doesnt have much to do with current events though.
Yeah, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the protesters out there just want to attack and destroy something for the hell of it. Especially an unprotected, government-related thing.
Dumb anarchists and undefended Government buildings is why
The last place id try to loot would be the place filled with americans, just saying. Those guys are nuts.
Sounds to me like a premptive security measure. I'm sure after the Bengazhi fiasco the State Department doesn't want to risk any other incidents. It would be a PR nightmare.
If the protestors wanted to destroy something for the sake of it, wouldn't they need more than 9 marines?
I'm sure they aren't the only ones protecting it.
-snip- I understood this wrong. Apologies.
If the protestors wanted to destroy something for the sake of it, wouldn't they need more than 9 marines?
I would say one US Marine has more training, equipment and capabilities than even a four man squad of Ukrainian police officers. Nine US Marines can do a lot more than you might think. And that's not even including the military personnel already stationed there.
After all, its American soil, they oughta protect it if things goes south.

Especially after the US is criticizing the old government for shooting at the rioters.
The US marines would not shoot Ukrainians, if they did it would have some serious repercussions.
That wouldn't have gone down well with the opposition. Especially since it implied she was connected with the old government. Speculation of course. Might just be rioters being rioters.
The only people who would be upset by the comment she made are people who have extremely low listening comprehension skills. I hop you don't fall into that camp.
It's a bit different when you are getting stormed by thousands of pissed of Eastern Europeans throwing Molotov Cocktails at you trying to break in to the small building you work in.
Similar to thousands of pissed off eastern europeans throwing molotov cocktails at a line you are forced to stand in. You cannot justify shooting at them when its the same situation. Besides there wouldn't be thousands, if the pro opposition media can be believed it would only be small radical groups. [editline]25th February 2014[/editline] If they fire a shot they will just escalate the situation. Those marines are just there to dissuade people from trying. If they shoot at rioters then they are either dead or the US will have a massacre on their hands.
Clearly this is part of a US plot to control Ukraine and destroy those pesky Ruskies! Just like that other time!

If you did and you think that she meant "fuck the E.U." as in "we dislike the E.U." then yes, you have poor comprehension skills.

If any rioters threaten American citizens within the embassy, the marines will be there to respond in force. This isn't a double standard.

A peaceful protest is ok, peacefully taking over a building is ok. People who bring guns and molotovs are criminals up to no good.
what point are you trying to make here
People have a double standard when they allow US marines shooting rioters but not Ukraine riot police, despite them keeping the peace for weeks prior.

That being said, I'd be sure the marines are there to deal with the potential criminals.

That brings the total to 14 marines that should be there. That would be more then enough to repel anything they might see there.
