Microsoft is working on an advanced version of its competitor to Apple's Siri, using research from an artificial intelligence project called "Einstein."
Microsoft has been running its "personal assistant" Cortana on its Windows phones for a year, and will put the new version on the desktop with the arrival of Windows 10 this autumn. Later, Cortana will be available as a standalone app, usable on phones and tablets powered by Apple Inc's iOS and Google Inc's Android, people familiar with the project said.
"This kind of technology, which can read and understand email, will play a central role in the next roll out of Cortana, which we are working on now for the fall time frame," said Eric Horvitz, managing director of Microsoft Research and a part of the Einstein project, in an interview at the company's Redmond, Washington, headquarters. Horvitz and Microsoft declined comment on any plan to take Cortana beyond Windows.
Really?

They could of thought of a better name.
In later parts of the Frederik Pohl's Heechee Sci-Fi series, the main protagonist has a fully conscious virtual AI assistant (who he basically befriends quite deeply), who's modelled after Albert Einstein. I can assure you that if you read the books, you will end up wanting your own AI Einstein bro as well.
I wonder if it could be a reference to that.

They would have gone with someone else who's artificial and intelligent, but "Project Stephen Hawking" doesn't quite have the same ring to it
I hope they release cortana in other countries first.
I still haven't gotten Cortana in Norway on my 920, what the fuck is up with their priorities?
Were you expecting heavy rollout of a finished product?
Giving consumers less and less reasons to but a Windows Phone.

Implying anyone had a reason to buy a Windows Phone before this, other than being a Microsoft employee or not having enough money to buy a Moto G, or one of the Android One phones.

It's moreso that users are given the freedom to use microsoft producs in their own enviroments
Garry's never not going to buy an iphone at this stage, so Microsoft need to somehow extend the market those type of people

I love my Lumia 930 and WP 8.1. The only downside to me is the lack of apps, which doesn't bother me that much since pretty much every app I used everyday on Android is there on WP's Store.
It's a cheap, powerful phone with one of the greatest phone camera of the market. The rest of the Lumias are equally amazing for their respective price range.
Whoever harshly criticizes Windows Phones obviously never had one.

French Cortana is shit though. Voice recognition is surprisingly accurate but functionnalities are limited.
I love my windows phone. Cortana is fucking useless though.

Makes sense, once you get oop nawth the accents become fucking indecipherable
I love my windows phone. Cortana is fucking useless though.
Useless???? I use her nearly every day. I find her an incredible feature.

That may be, but this throws Windows Phone under the bus. Cortana was one of the paraded feature of the OS, being a bit of a hook to gain market share, and now, that hook is disappearing.

This reminds me of the einstein robot made by Hanson Robotics;

They also made this guy;

and more recently this robot for autism emotion training.

The only real selling point of windows phoes is if you want to run windows 10 on a phone.
We won't see how good (or shit) it is until later
I still like working with android however, basically a linux phone

I'd want my own J.A.R.V.I.S to be honest. The sass and accent, man.

Plus Hawking is still kinda alive. Honestly though, not entirely sure how they can accomplish this very well.
Integrating cortana into the calendar and email on WP and Win is fairly simple for them, considering they are using the coop apis, getting the same access on iOS and android though...

I'll admit, I use her more as my music player than my actual music player. Just telling her to shuffle everything or playing something specific is faster than opening an application.
I wonder if this is wise. Higher market adoption of their technology is good, but I wonder if this outweighs having Cortana as an exclusive selling point of Windows Phone.
Cortana's actually had the best vocal recognition I've ever had to use. I'm on not-great equipment and the only thing she didn't get 100% right was "Lacuna Coil" (and even then when she opened the search page Bing knew what the fuck "look coon a coil" was supposed to be).
I've only ever had a chance to use Cortana as a voice activated Bing searchbox, but once all that digital assistant functionality gets implemented she's going to be pretty damn great.

MS has been improving their recognition software for a while, they use it to subtitle their press conferences then translate it.
Got implemented into skype
