How could i upgrade my computer? (spec list inside)

Long story short, i bought a prebuilt a while ago and have been upgrading it constantly, but stopped about a year ago. I still thought i had a really good rig going on for the price i paid. Then my friend, the spoiled bastard he is, pays close to 2k for a gaming computer that he had a local shop build for him, all his mothers money. I used his computer and it is fucking amazing and a huge improvement on my computer. On newer games i even get graphical lag now, the day that happened i felt like cutting myself D:
In the past months i have really fallen off the grid of all the new chipsets, all the new cards mobos, soundcards...blah blah,
Here's my basic specs.
4 gb of ram
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
E8400 Intel Core 2 Duo at 3.00 GHz
Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate
Generic, stock sound card.
EG31M-S2 Gigabyte Mobo
Really it doesn't need to be SUPER CHEAP, i got about 600$ just lying around doing nothing, so i figured i'd upgrade.
Right now im definitely going to get a new sound card, i was thinking about a new graphics card, but if anything, i'd just bottle neck if i go any higher.
and on another note, my friend with the 1,800$ rig, is only using it for tf2 and MAPLESTORY.
I'd probably upgrade your graphics card.
By the way, your "friend" is stupid. :downs:
Id upgrade the CPU to an i5 or so
Also my freinds PC Is so bad it can barley run maplestpry on low settings, go emachines! XD
I lol'd Maplestory
I recommend a new CPU/RAM/Mobo/Case, your gpu is fine, for now >_>

He plays mostly text based games as well, the only game that actually makes use of his rig is tf2, AND ONLY TF2.

I'm looking at both a new cpu and Mobo, anyone have an suggestions? specifically for a mobo.
if you get a new mobo and cpu you may need to get new ram too.
Rams dirt cheap man.

I don't think you'll need a new sound card.
If you get a good cooler for your CPU, you can overclock it and it should perform better.

after looking around on newegg, selected an i7, new mobo, and 4 gigs ddr3 ram.
Just under 500 bucks.....damn.
Your CPU is not too bad.
Just upgrade that graphics card and your good to go

I'm afraid i'll be bottle necking if i get anything higher then what i have.
Dont get an i7, it has no benefit to gaming over an i5. Unless you do 3d modelling and rendering, dont get it. Instead get an i5 750.
You could sell that stuff, and then buy a killer AMD Phenom II 965 X4/i5 rig with a high quality GPU.
