My dad's computer recently broke down, and he wants me to get a new processor and motherboard so he can use the old parts to make a working machine.
I'm in the UK and my budget (for the processor itself) is around £130, and I'll be only using it really for games.
My current hardware is:
CPU: Intel E8400 3GHz dual core
GPU: Radeon HD 6850
RAM: 4GB DDR3 @ 1066MHz (I think?)
I did some searching on a local PC parts store and found these:
Intel Core i5-3450

AMD FX-8120

According to my Google searches the AMD is better for highly parallel applications but the Intel is better for games, is this right?
Which of these chips would you guys recommend - is there anything else I should consider for this budget?
Cheers.
Cheers.
Get the i5, the FX is a piece of trash.
Intel i5, can't go wrong.
I have an Intel i7 because I run Photoshop CS5 and Sony Vegas. Games tend to use a little bit less processing power because they may tend to lean towards graphics, making the i5 a popular choice among gamers for their rigs.

Well it's more that games don't really benefit from hyper-threading at all, so there is no reason to spend the extra 100 dollars. The processors are effectively equivalent in terms of raw horsepower.
Regardless you can't really go wrong with an unlocked i5.
What kind of mobo is your dad getting? Depending on its cost you could spring for a better i5.
He's going to have my current one, which is a Gigabyte G41MT-S2PT. As for my new board, I'm not sure. Assuming I was to get an Intel processor I'd probably get this:

That look okay?
And thanks for the replies everyone
Okay, I'm about to go buy the parts today. Currently I have a 650W power supply - will that be enough for the system with the new CPU in it?

If it is a reliable brand then yes.
It's an OCZ, is that decent?
What exact model is it?

i5 is better, Amd is crap now and i think you will be more satisfied with the i5
Don't buy a K series unless you plan on overclocking, otherwise purchase the non-k model also Intel Core i5 3570 Quad Core!!!!!!!!!
