If you're in a cab you're generally "less in control" and if a person is giving you unwanted attention of that kind, especially if you're a girl travelling home late at night, it might be pretty damn unpleasant.

During a longer taxi trip (1 hour, ~68 kilometers), me and the driver chatted a lot about what kind of music we listened to, and it was interesting because the guy was a member of a metal band. I believe all people have interesting stories to share, and that it doesn't hurt to listen & participate.

The list of people I like and want to talk to is a short list, and the chances that I stepped into the cab of someone on that list is very slim
