I used to work at a university lab where we did genetic research on micro-organisms living in the guts of cockroaches, and as such we had to also breed and harvest them.

We had a huge darkroom way down in the cellary catacombs of the university, with lots of terrariums filled to the brim with cockroach species from all over the world. Occasionaly someone would tip a terrarium, or they would not put the lid on correctly, and some cockroaches would escape.

A friend who studied at the university said they were once following a lecture when they saw something crawling on the wall. When they went to check it out, it turned out to be a giant five inch long amazonian cockroach. Someone caught it and took it home as a pet. He called it Steve.
