I'm sick of Vista hogging my RAM. I'm sick of Nvidias lazy coding, still not being able to fix "The display driver Nvldkl has stopped responding". So I'm probably gonna build a new PC from start, however I need got some questions. Should I get 7 or XP? Do you think 7 will be good to get for gaming or will it be plagued with driver-issues like Vista was at launch? What would be a good ATI card used for gaming. It's a card that should handle every game. I'm thinking the ATI equilivant of the Nvidia 8800-serie. Maybe even GTX 260, but I'm not sure if I even need such a heavy card. It hogs electricity and you only really need it if you plan to play games such as GTA IV on Ultra High.. Also I'm thinking of getting a 3.0ghz dual core from Intel, but shees, Intel is so expensive. Would a Phenom 3x or 4x core be better?
Vista doesn't hog your RAM.
I hope to Io that this is a troll
What's wrong? Oh I get it, a guy bashes Nvidia and Vista and hes a troll? Pathetic. Vista DOES hog your RAM. Most games require you to have 2GB of RAM if you have Vista, 1GB if you got XP. Of course, this is because of the new Aero and what not, but you can easily download a Vista theme for XP.. The DX10? Not worth it if you ask me..

Enjoy your computational middleage.
You could always reinstall the drivers...
I have tried everything. I went back to previous drivers even. However, it probably is a fault on my side as well. Im on a laptop, an MSI laptop, although not 100% since it was a company that bought these laptops then just put their sticker on them. They should be in charge of providing necessary drivers. They don't.. But it's not entirely MSIs fault either. I got this problem with my old official Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX Ultra. Though I'd appreciate my original questions being answered..
Enjoy your computational middleage.
Enjoy your x-meme
Vista wouldn't hog your ram if you had more than 2GB. Get a Phenom II 955 for 200$ if you want a quad, and a Phenom II 550 for 100$ if you want dual. The ATI equivalent of a GTX260 would be the 4870. 150$ for a 1GB version. Keep Vista, get a 64-bit version, get 6GB of DDR3 ram if you can afford it, or get the 32-bit version and get 4GB of DDR2 ram.
I have tried everything. I went back to previous drivers even.
Tried removing them in safe mode, rebooting and installing them in safe mode? I've had to do that before. Also, those errors can be caused by hardware problems too (happened to me when overheating).
I got exactly 2GB ram Also whats the equivalent of the 8800-series?

I only get them when my card has been 108c for like 2-3 hours then it goes black screen to cool and im back again..
A couple of key points to the uneducated OP. These are points that I came up with as I was scrolling through the thread. - Vista doesn't 'hog' your RAM. It uses a bit more than XP for an obvious reason, not to mention the caching idea. - Nothing wrong with nVidia cards either. You're probably doing something wrong, because millions of people would have picked up on this if it was a common problem. - You're odd. You whine about Vista running bad on your current build, but you're buying a new build anyway. Answer: get Vista now and you get W7 for free. - Vista isn't plagued by driver issues, and 7 is the same thing as Vista in that regard. - Get the 4870. - GTAIV actually mostly benefits from a good, quad core CPU more than it does from a good GPU. - Go Intel if you have money, go AMD if you're on a budget.
I have used XP for as long as it's been out, and I love it. The only problem is that with the release of windows 7, they will stop supporting, updating, and all together throw XP out the window, so I wouldn't recommend that you use XP on a new system. Windows 7 is great, and I have had no driver issues so far. It even scans your hardware and downloads/installs your drivers for you, same whenever you plug in a new device, for example a camera. Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit does require you to have 15GB free space and a minimum of 2GB ram to use, but it's well worth it. Think of vista, without all the hassle and problems, now blend it with the awesomeness of XP, thats windows 7 imo.

Kind of off topic, but is Windows 7 compatible with Xp games?
Kind of off topic, but is Windows 7 compatible with Xp games?
Yes..? And so is Vista.
If you think vista uses so much RAM, why don't you just go and spend 90 dollars on RAM (like 8 gigs lawl) rather then an OS?
Because I'm on a fucking laptop. When I build my desktop, I'll put in 4gb. The issue was never ram, it was just one of the annoyances I had with Vista. Read original questions
Hell, I'm on a laptop too and it's great.
Maybe you should post your specs.
I got exactly 2GB ram Also whats the equivalent of the 8800-series?
not worth it. Also, I had dual 8600's, for some reason they gave me the nvlddmkm error all the time, I never managed to get it fixed. It seems that newer cards don't return that error (I got a GTX 260)
The equivalent of an 8800? If I remember right, the 9800 is similar to the 8800, and the GTX260 is similar to the 9800. Just get a 4870, that'll play any game you have on UHQ besides Crysis, Bioshock, and FEAR2.
Superfetch, google it. [editline]08:04PM[/editline] And what drivers are you using? If your using old/beta drivers that's where the problem could be.
Maybe you should post your specs.
AMD Athlon X2 TK-55 (~1.8GHz) 2GB RAM ATi Xpress 1150
Vista loosens it's ram when you run an application that will need the ram. It uses it for the system while it's in use. Answer: Get a windows vista with free windows 7 upgrade. Windows 7 beta is great though. Only problem is that internet banking doesn't always support it. Mine for instance comes up with a "16-bit msDOS error". Seriously, it's the banks fault. Too old a system for now a days. Nvidia cards will often do the "The display driver Nvldkl has stopped responding" if it get's too hot. Try putting up the fan control, that fixed it for me. Also newest drivers. (Probably won't be able to control the fan on a laptop).
Oh, and Aero turns itself off when games are on.
I hope to Io that this is a troll
Your take on the usual expression "Hope to god" was quite amusing as you replaced God, with another fictional deity "Io". Good job.
Pratchett, bitches also OP needs to learn jack shit about things before he hates them, because I'm willing to bet everything he thinks is "bad" about Vista will also be in 7
