Sooooooooooooooooooo hi there. First and foremost I do have a band yes, and it's called Oni. Why? I'm not sure really, but it was short, meant devil and didn't sound terrible. I guess you can say that we are very Mastodon influenced (probably because Mastodon IS my favorite band and I bring most of the riffs to the band to build up off). I'm not going to stall anymore with a wall of text, but I'm just going to warn you that these were recorded in a small bar, with two microphones into a Presonus mixer/recording thing, yeah let's say thing. One of the guys got pushed into me whilst I was playing so I almost missed a beat and played as close to what I was supposed to as possible so I wouldn't miss the beat: Like I said before the quality is not great, but you can grasp the song. The playing is obviously sloppy here and there, it was our first concert so that's just given I'd think. I do remember posting the songs before, but never all together in one thread. I don't remember getting a proper opinion on it aswell. All criticism is appreciated (the world would be boring if everyone had the same music taste). Here's our facebook page, it's mostly in Icelandic, but that'll change soon hopefully: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Oni/139867879382507?ref=ts
Very nice... I would get your album. The quality of recording isn't great which is a shame because some of it sounds like really nice playing. Listening to "When The Darkness Became". Keep it up bro.
We're gonna start recording at the latest August 2012
Oh god, that bass! :allears:
I really liked the experimental element of "Hefill" (along with the rest after the intro). Other than that, it's great. Awesome guitarwork especially, and while it is influenced by Mastodon and Southern Metal, it still sounds original. I'd love to hear the finished results after proper recording. Any constructive criticism? The guitar tone needs more "oomph" I think, but it's up to you really. I'm just more used to really distorted guitars
Thank god I wasn't the only one who thought so I AM playing through a Dual Terror 35 watt amplifier in a very small house with only two mics to record the song so it was a bit hard to, you know, make the guitar sound pop. I'm hoping that when we go into the studio that the guitar will be more oomphy if that's a word.
Well due to tube logic if you have the volume up louder than it should be in a very small house, the distortion/fuzz/gain will pop right up and give you that reassuring dirty tone
My amp was on 8 for the whole concert :v:
Ah, well that's an orange amp for ya. They're not the most "metal" amps anyways, but you got it so I'm guessing you'd be satisfied with the tone you end up with. Some mic dynamics may also help, not too sure
The mics were out in the hall so there were really no mic dyanamics When I tried the amp in the store I fell in love with it. I'm gonna give it a good tube change and buy an overdrive to get a more saturated metal tone in november. We're gonna play a concert in december when the drummer gets back (he's learning to be a brain surgeon, no joke) and then in the summer we'll be playing on the metal festival Eistnaflug again, but this time on the mainstage. So hopefully we'll try to go to Akureyri and Reykjavík and play some concerts there. If you come to Iceland we'll hold a concert for you and give you a free ticket and shirt
Hopefully you'll get big enough to travel around the world, I'd be patient enough to pay for a proper show if you promise to pursue your Southern Metal career!
Hell, so would I. It's not really my type of music, but it sounds pretty jamming regardless.
Thanks for your kind words guys It really means a lot to me, and to be honest that's the dream
Sounds really good! It's like 3 of my favourite genres all in one :v:. I really like the vocals, they remind me a bit of Kyuss (especially in Whirpool), though the dirty vocals could use a bit more energy. Killer basslines too. I don't really hear that big of a Mastodon influence, which isn't a bad thing at all, you just sound pretty original. Looking forwards to the proper recordings.
Listening to Hefill now, mostly because of what Puddlez said about it. My opinions: Everything needs crisper production, but you already know this. Drums need to be brought out more, with the kick and snare getting a sharper cruncher. Bass needs a lot more of that low-end thrumm sound that well-produced bass has. Guitar needs a crunchier, more prominent tone. Vocals... actually... the vocals sound the best out of the best. As it is, I can't think of anything that needs to be done to the vocals. I think they're perfect - performance wise, production wise, everywhere. As you make those adjustments, you may have to do something to them to make them fit with the new mix, I don't know. That being said, it's fucking awesome. When you guys have an actual album out, be sure to let me know. Just listening to Hefill, I definitely can say I want to own this album. The vocals are awesome, by the way. Like, genuinely, they're awesome. I can't really think of another band with vocals quite like them. I'll be really sad if something happens to your vocalist.
Wow, that's awful kind of you Although the song's name is Hefill which means snow plough :v:
This is good. Hefill is pretty great, actually. I would love to hear some of these tracks recorded in a proper studio!
Hey guys just a quick update I showed the bassist (my best friend) the comments you guys posted. He just want's to say thanks for your kind words and he told me he's thinking about getting one or two songs recorded in the winter.
Cut out that winner I rated you and give it to him for me, please?
We're getting a song recorded for FREE in the month, maybe after new year. What song do you guys wanna hear in proper studio quality? (I don't think we can do hefill in one night, and the drummer would rather get it perfectly than just half ass it)
