I am about to go and jailbreak my 3g that is running 3.1.3 and was just curious as to what program I want to use. I dont understand the differences between Blackra1n and Spirit? And are those the best two to use or is there a better one out there?

Neither blackra1n or quickpwn can jailbreak 3.1.3. Spirit is your only option, but iTunes 9.2 has pathed Spirit (somewhat) and will force your phone into a boot loop. If you havent updated itunes, youll be fine.
Redsn0w is your best option. Spirit uses a userland jailbreak and it doesn't give you actual full access to the root. Also I heard it messes up the iOS update if you ever want to upgrade.
