Curious, he went to Google Earth to find it. He poked around for a while, with no luck. Then he came across something kind of weird. Thomson, who served in the CIA from 1972 to 1985 and as a consultant to the National Intelligence Council until 1996, has made something of a second career finding odd stuff in public satellite imagery. He discovered these giant grids etched into the Chinese desert in 2011, and a suspected underground missile bunker in Iran in 2008. When the Israeli Air Force destroyed a mysterious facility in Syria the year before, Thomson put together an 812-page dossier on the so-called "Box on the Euphrates." Old analyst habits die hard, it seems. But even this old analyst is having trouble ID'ing the objects he found in the overhead images of Kashgar. "I haven't the faintest clue what it might be -- but it's extensive, the structures are pretty big and funny-looking, and it went up in what I'd call an incredible hurry," he emails. So he'd like your help in solving this little mystery. What follows are 10 images of the site. If you've got ideas on what might be there, drop me a note, or find me on Twitter or Facebook. I'll pass it on to Thomson.
SOURCE HIGHER RES IMAGES
The internet always needs a good mystery. That's when we're at our best, when we haven't got a fucking clue what is going on.
I bet they're building super advanced weapons and robots in that facility that break after 5 minutes of use
They are making a Stargate I tell you. Somewhere in each grid is a chevron that they are looking for.
It's going to end up being a fabrication shop or scrap metal place or something boring
It's going to end up being a fabrication shop or scrap metal place or something boring
probably a swamp gas factory
Is this what old CIA analysts do in retirement?
Is this what old CIA analysts do in retirement?
Old habits die hard. EDIT: Anyone care to explain how this post is funny?
Probably recycling rare earth materials due to how rare it's getting nowadays.
This kinda makes me want to scour Google Earth for odd/mysterious things.
Old habits die hard.
Even after decades of experience... he still gets the itch. The itch to search for commie missile sites!
Probably recycling rare earth materials due to how rare it's getting nowadays.
Considering China are doing pretty good in terms of Rare Earth metals I doubt that they are recycling them at this particular site.
Is this what old CIA analysts do in retirement?
Some old people restore cars, others build ships-in-a-bottle, this guy analyzes hi res satellite images of secret Chinese and Iranian facilities.
It's going to end up being a fabrication shop or scrap metal place or something boring
I bet it's the exact thing he was looking for just in the place he didn't think it was.

I love how the 'higher res' pictures are lower res than what's in the OP.

The whole situation reminded me of him:
I thought he was an operator, not an analyst. The whole situation reminded me of him: -image snip-
Who be he?
Who be he?
He's the main character in Rubicon, a cancelled AMC show about analysts and a conspiracy.
Slow news day or what. "Man finds big misc building in evil enemy communist country on Google Earth"
Dog farms
Then it's actually just a legitimate factory or even high budget sweatshop or something. Or maybe it's a reptilian command center
Also this reminds me of that site that documents all the North Korean AA and artillery sites as well as the death camps.
On a related note, can someone tell me what the fuck this is? I found it on Google Earth in the middle of the Gobi Desert. His name is buck and he likes to [sp]look for knives in ancient Chinese complexes... or make you do it, whatever.[/sp]
I was looking on google earth and found a load of these weird moated structures in a large area of the gobi desert, anyone have any idea what they are? [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/qwOUS.jpg[/thumb] I found this complex too (it has a small football pitch for whatever reason) [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/dHkG1.jpg[/thumb] It has roads leading off it that go to smaller complexes like these (note what appears to look like helicopters) [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/UzdnU.jpg[/thumb]
