So this is just a little idea that popped out of my head as I was browsing the computer illiterates thread. It seems besides talking about our lovable tech idiots we also like to talk about some of the cool experiences we have messing about with our computers. Whether we're talking about the days of the past or new. People who browse this forum in general seem to like to just mess about with their tech and share their stories. So is the purpose of this thread.
So FP, what do you dabble in? Personally for me, I experiment with VMs of old OS'es, software, etc. Both my dads have some cool software and hardware from around the 80's and 90's. My (blood) father has pretty much licensed microsoft product in existence since the 80's. Recently I've just been researching OS/2 Warp, how IBM implemented the graphical interface. My dad(blood again) also had an old AST he wanted me to see if I could get running to use all his old database softwares(dataease, etc)
So post your stories, interests, pics, anything you like tech/tinker related.
I made a waterpump from an old optical drive
I also used a bottle cap

Clever, care to elaborate?

well i just made it from pure boredom
I used a straw from McDonalds, an ordinary bottle cap, a motor from an optical drive and some plastic bits also from the optical drive, to make a propeler
you can imagine the result ( i hope)
there is also a similar project on instructables
You have such an awesome dad that he knows his shit.
I'm making a banner. It's not gonna be the best thing ever but it should do nicely.

Make the Water Cooler larger and place the PC inside.
I've been looking for a while now for an affordable LCD screen to fit in the space of 2 5.25" drive bays. At one stage I considered a PS One screen, but it would've been too much of a hack job to get it in there stable and connected correctly, so I've been stuck for almost 2 years now with the idea to complete my project, but no screen to use.
Anyone here have any ideas on a small colour LCD screen?

I mean, I found a tutorial on what I wanna do, but I can't find a screen like that anywhere.

That's an idea, but they tend to be overpriced and I don't know how easy it'd be to have as a second monitor.
I thought computer illiterates was considered chat as well.
well it is H&S, land of unnecessary megathreads
Just ordered $300 worth of parts to build my sisters computer. She gave me a couple of old Dells to see if I could salvage some parts. Opened up one and found an ATi rage card. Kinda weird seeing a GPU half as old as I am.

I thought it might save the thread from getting constantly derailed.
last time I touched 2 running wires, I shorted out the PSU in my original xbox. Haven't played with anything since.

I'd look for a portable DVD player that supports video input. I managed to get a broken one very cheap (wouldn't read DVDs) and it supports composite video in. You could use an old video card with an S-Video port and a composite adapter to connect it. The screen also takes 12v no problem since they're usually designed to be used in cars.
