Above: the Moon sneaks in to a GOES satellite image in December 2012 (Sauce: NOAA) Welcome to the first edition of what will (should) be the hopefully recurring Facepunch Weather and Meteorology thread! Feel free to call this thread WX&M for short when referring to it. In this thread, you are able to discuss weather patterns in any area of the world, what weather models (such as the GFS, GEM, ECMWF, NAM, etc) are showing, weather history, famous people in the meteorology field (such as the late John Hope, Jim Cantore), and meteorology in general. According to Wikipedia:
Meteorology is the interdisciplinary scientific study of the atmosphere. Studies in the field stretch back millennia, though significant progress in meteorology did not occur until the 18th century. The 19th century saw breakthroughs occur after observing networks developed across several countries. After the development of the computer in the latter half of the 20th century, breakthroughs in weather forecasting were achieved. Meteorological phenomena are observable weather events which illuminate, and are explained by the science of meteorology. Those events are bound by the variables that exist in Earth's atmosphere; temperature, air pressure, water vapor, and the gradients and interactions of each variable, and how they change in time. Different spatial scales are studied to determine how systems on local, regional, and global levels impact weather and climatology.
Climatology discussion is also welcome, just try to keep it minimal, as meteorology and climatology are two mostly different fields. Unless there's a potential for a tsunami hitting populated areas (or a statement by the PTWC or WC/ATWC has been issued), please try to stay away from earthquake discussion (mentioning one has happened is fine though, provided it's strong enough). Please note that this is NOT meant to be a "it's fucking rainy here"-style thread. This thread is for posts that discuss the general pattern of weather in an area and what pattern(s) is/are predicted and/or happening right now and general meteorology culture. This thread isn't for posts that just simply state "it's fucking sunny" and offer no analysis as to why so at a certain date and time. Please also try to refrain from just posting an image like on Jeff Masters' Weather Underground blog, with no accompanying caption whatsoever. Too bad both of my province's radars are currently dead. If only KMVX was a bit closer to the border... Forecast here isn't calling for anything (except clouds), though. It's going to be a lot worse further south of this image due to an upcoming winter storm.
I would tell you about the weather in Arizona, but it's going to be the same thing for the next 6 months: hot.
Tornadoes are probably the most beautiful yet at the same time terrifying thing on Earth.
Precip. totals from models out to 84h for the previously mentioned winter storm (from the PSU site): NAM: GFS: The GFS has this system stalling near the Appalachians by 84h, while the NAM lets the system get absorbed by another low.
Canada gets two snow storms in the first 3 days of spring
Canada gets two snow storms in the first 3 days of spring
The UK is also getting one as well.
About two weeks ago I think I saw some asperatus clouds off in the distance after coming back home from work (NY), though they didn't look very tortuous and instead looked more docile like this: also as a personal side-note I sincerely wish weather-related conspiracy theorists would fuck off there's nothing more irritating than browsing youtube for videos of strange meteorological phenomena and coming across a dozen or so videos titled "omg HAARP???" just because some people don't know what lenticular clouds are

I do a lot of storm chasing / Skywarn stuff. Another great weather radar program / software is WeatherTAP.
I do a lot of storm chasing / Skywarn stuff. Another great weather radar program / software is WeatherTAP.
Mind sharing some pictures from your chases (if you have any)?
I'll have to hunt down some pictures. I have them on other drives. Another great site I recommend is SpotterNetwork. They have a Google Maps overlay that shows the locations of storm spotters. It also has radar. The map will show reports made by the spotters and chasers, such as hail, wall clouds, funnel clouds, tornadoes, high wind, etc. It is a good resource. [editline]23rd March 2013[/editline] Found some quick pictures, sorry for the small resolutions. I'll have to find the originals sometime. It eventually began to rotate and organize. I watched it for a while and eventually thought it would not produce anything as it began to become disorganized again. Ten minutes after I left the area it dropped a brief tornado. Just my luck. Tornado damage.

Hurricane season is around the corner. I love watching me sone Hurricane data maps. A beautiful blend of oceanography and meteorology.
Chicago here, cold as fuck.
Looking foward to it being winter here in Perth. Windy, rainy and cold. Going to be a nice change from what it was a couple of weeks ago. Funny how the weather changed so quickly. Two weeks ago it was 42c one day, and was 35+ all week. Now it hardly reaches 30 during the day and at night you have to wear a jumper now.
Tornadoes are probably the most beautiful yet at the same time terrifying thing on Earth.
I raise to you fire tornadoes Only in Australia. [editline]24th March 2013[/editline] I don't like morning weather. Went camping last night with some mates and stayed up the whole night. Before the sun came up it was a reasonable temperature, reasonable enough to go without a jacket. As soon as the sun came up it was bloody freezing and a jacket and beanie barely helped. Then about an hour afterwards had to take both off because I was sweating like mad. Went for a swim afterwards which helped a lot.
I raise to you fire tornadoes
American tornadoes are still worse though, even if fire tornadoes sound scary.
Winter storm warnings are now stretching through Ohio and Pennsylvania. Some thunderstorms, but expected to be non-severe. [editline]24th March 2013[/editline] Some severe thunderstorms are happening in lightning alley, some tornado warned: [editline]24th March 2013[/editline] Should also mention that there's a tornado warning for Orange County (not THAT OC in California) including Orlando.
thread music?
It's pretty damn quiet in the US right now weather-wise. In the meantime, have these graphics from the SPC showing what areas have the most severe thunderstorm and tornado watches so far this year: [thumb]http://www.spc.noaa.gov/wcm/2013_svrww_to_date.png[/thumb][thumb]http://www.spc.noaa.gov/wcm/2013_torww_to_date.png[/thumb]

The Storm Prediction Center just switched to a brand new site design: [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/P1UCmaD.png[/thumb] Parts of the old design still live on, such as when going to view the convective outlooks page.
What's the long term climate forecast for the UK? Towards Scotland.
