Idaho teen shoots burglar during home invasion, gunfight
It was 8 a.m. Packard had worked late at Freddy’s Frozen Custard the night before, and planned to sleep in. But now he was wide awake.
What was that noise?
After the banging stopped, he walked down the hallway of his family’s rural Rigby home. In the kitchen, he saw his dad, Bob Packard, coming in the door.
“I asked what that noise was,” Brian said. “And he didn’t know what it was.”
A minute earlier, Bob had pulled his truck into the driveway after visiting a friend. He noticed the garage door was raised by a foot. It had been closed when he’d left, an hour earlier.
Bob walked in through the garage, then noticed something else that was odd: The door to the kitchen was wide open.
Minutes later, there would be a gunfight inside the Packards’ brick single-story home, sending a suspected burglar to the hospital with a wound to the abdomen.
But at that moment, as they met in the family kitchen, Brian and Bob Packard said they were just trying to figure out what was going on.
Bob decided to walk out to the front yard, to see if there was anyone around. That’s when he said he spotted a man trying to crawl out the family’s spare bedroom window.
The man retreated back into the room. Bob headed back inside.
Bob again met with Brian in the kitchen, and they walked down the darkened hallway toward the spare bedroom. Brian was trailing his dad, and had grabbed his shotgun out of a cabinet.
There was nobody in the spare room. Bob walked into is own room, just across the hall. The bedroom door, which locks, had been kicked open — likely producing the loud banging sound Brian had heard minutes before.
Shots rang out.
“As soon as he saw us step into the room, that’s when he started shooting at us,” Bob said. “And the bullets were flying past us. I can’t believe we didn’t get hit.”
Bullets went through a chair, a closet and a door jamb. One pierced a framed baby picture of Brian — the first photograph taken after he was born.
The man shot five or six times, Brian and Bob said. There was a pause, as the man crouched down in a corner of the bedroom.
As his father stepped back, Brian moved forward into the room and took a single shot, hitting the man in the lower abdomen.
The intruder dropped the handgun.

200% justified.
To think there's people that say civilians have no use for guns in their home... You gotta be kidding me.

Nah, we're supposed to just sit there on our hands while we wait for the police to respond and hopefully not get harmed by armed robbers.

And there are people who'd rather spend shitton of $$ on panic rooms because ~spooky firearms~ and ~poor misguided robbers~.
All you need is a few cameras and a .38 in your drawer to feel comfy.
Nah, we're supposed to just sit there on our hands while we wait for the police to respond and hopefully not get harmed by armed robbers.
Do robbers really harm the people though? Most with sense just know that getting caught for robbery is a lot lighter than murder or rape. Rare cases exist where you get fucking nutjobs but there not that common.
I guess I'm just used to a normal police response time being a matter of minutes
Totally justified. But I've heard that in the American justice system it's better to straight up kill the dude instead of leaving him with a stomach wound? He could sue the family later and fuck them up?

Maybe since the robber started shooting first, and the other guy only shot once to stop him being a threat, the court case wouldn't go too in favor of the robber?
But I thought home invasions statistically don't end violently and that you should submit yourself to their demands.

Uh, you did read this thread, right? You know. Where it flat out states the burglar opened fire on the house owner and his son.

I'd rather not wait to see if he wanted to kill me with the weapon he was clearly brandishing.

It's a vicious circle. With firearms being commonplace in the US, you have more chances of getting shot by a criminal, thus people arm themselves for self-defense, which in turn makes robbers more likely to be shot by homeowners, which means they're more inclined to shoot than just flee when discovered, etc.
Basically people almost never want to kill but they also don't want to die, it's sort of like the prisoner's dilemma. I suppose that reflection takes precedence on the legal consequences, especially when you're high on adrenaline due to fear.

As edgy and horrid as this will sound, it tends to fall into the realm of the following: Corpses do not talk at the courthouse.

Forensics can tell if you killed the guy under suspicious circumstances though.
The good news is that burglar is likely going to be shitting and pissing into a bag the rest of his life, considering the shotgun was loaded with either birdshot or 00 buck, his intestines are likely ripped to shreds. Taking into account he shot first, he's going to get attempted murder charges, and good fucking luck suing the family you tried to kill after you broke into their home. Since the son only shot once, and didn't fire again once the intruder had been neutralized and was no longer a threat, it's safe to say no civil court would ever rule in favor of the home invader if he or his family decided to file a lawsuit against them.

There's a reason why these stories are in the news.
It's because they rarely happen.
What you don't have in the news is the tens of thousands of accidental(and intentional) gun deaths and injuries you have every year.
But hey, all those deaths are worth it if you get to keep your boom stick for whatever reason and for the one family a month that shoots and permanently disfigures an intruder who could be rehabilitated and become a functional member of society.

Jesus what are you even yapping about. The intruder was inside somebody's home, armed with a gun, had the intent to kill, and very much tried to take another life. Yet here you are, drumming up yet another subpar post.

It is totally worth it.
By disallowing people to own and use firearms, you are asking that one family a month to potentially sacrifice itself because others are too stupid to keep their guns safe. It's like banning free speech as a whole because someone might say something harmful and/or drives someone to suicide. You don't need a license to speak in public, and as this US election has demonstrated, words can be far more dangerous than a single gun.

Yeah okay if I'm ever robbed by an armed assailant I'll be sure to just hug them and tell them that I love them and that they matter.

And of course this family's life is worth more than another family where an accidental discharge blew the face off a relative.
No, the intruder was not there "with intent to kill". The article says that he was trying to escape through a window, then ran back when he couldn't, and only when cornered started shooting.
So if the kid hadn't picked up a shotgun and they had kept their cool, the guy would have run away, police would maybe have found the guy later, arrested him, and there wouldn't be bullet holes in the house.
Shit he's stolen would maybe be covered by insurance or later confiscated by police, but in any case is worth less than a guy now pissing in a bag and a teen who might need psychological counselling once reality kicks in, which costs literally everyone more.
But again, boom stick.

Rehabilitation for someone who commits petty crimes is one thing, but this was an armed home invasion.

It's impressive just how out of touch you seemingly are.
Is life in Estonia really that good? How the fuck do you assume that the home intruder armed to the teeth would have just bolted out when he knows he was spotted by 2 fucking witnesses?

Who cares, even if it's a hundred cases a week (or slightly under 6000 cases a year) you still have 73,000 firearm injuries, 11,000 homicides and 21,175 suicides (X amount of which wouldn't have happened without a gun, as is documented).
I'm sorry that we have to play with numbers here but honestly, you could bump it to 100 cases a day where someone shoots a burglar and it wouldn't even reach one fourth of the human loss and devastation that guns cause in the US.

how many pulp fiction style shootouts have you been involved in?

I'm saying there's better options than killing or disfiguring a person, criminal or not.
