Detroit — A library security guard is out of a job following accusations he conducted illicit speed traps and tried to ticket a real cop. Tim Tompkin, the Detroit Public Library's assistant security director, is fired effective today, library officials confirmed Thursday. The move comes one week after he was suspended because a Detroit Police officer alleged Tompkin pulled her over Oct. 6 for going 80 mph on the Lodge Freeway near Wyoming. That's nowhere near any library, and the system's guards aren't authorized to stop motorists. The off-duty officer Tompkin allegedly pulled over — Viera Brownlee — filed a police complaint a few days after the weekend incident, police said. His retrofitted library-issued SUV had dashboard lights and he was carrying a gun, she said. Neither is allowed at the library. The library's spokesman, A.J. Funchess, confirmed the firing but said he's unaware whether an internal probe revealed any evidence that Tompkin had pulled over other motorists. The Detroit News couldn't reach Tompkin for comment.
Source. Library Security is serious business. :v:
Why the fuck do you need security at a libr...
Detroit
...oh.
Why the fuck do you need security at a libr... ...oh.
All serious libraries have security, like any public place they're kinda obligated. Not to mention many have collections worth millions.
Why the fuck do you need security at a libr...
Detroit
...oh.
Some lady from Detroit made a reply to the article:
Sandy GoldenBrown · Clerk at FRANKFURT.de Sir...you wouldnt believe the things we see at the Library....yes we need security.....guns are even here....the patrons have them....

The collections at my Library's are lucky to be worth hundreds
My library would be lucky to have collections.
Would not want to live in Detroit.
No one wants to live in Detroit. However, the suburbs and towns surrounding detroit are generally very nice. Im 30 minutes outside the city, and its a VERY nice community.
I love security guards so much for this stuff
Why the fuck do you need security at a libr... ...oh.
Libraries have a pretty bad history for getting destroyed by assholes, to be fair

I've clocked 100 MPH on 96, right past a cop, and he didn't even bat an eye. Just gotta watch them Dearborn Heights 5-0.
"Officer, do you have any idea how fast you were going?"

It's just about as safe as any other major inner city, I would say. Detroit is very large, and the bad areas definitely cause people to overlook the good areas.

I think theyre just bored tho. The other night I was going about 85 down 94 and I noticed someone was riding my ass and I was about to speed up to put some distance between us, but I looked at them in my mirror and noticed they had a spotlight on driver side mirror so I was like "shit" and just let off the gas, coasted to about 75, and then the cop just pulled away and sped past me. I figure as long as youre not driving badly, they dont really care if youre 10-15 or so over the limit.

I got into a headon collision at the emagine theatre because some idiot that was texting ran 2 stop signs. The Novi police refused to come to the scene, so I had to drive my badly damaged car 3 miles to file a report.

We got atleast here in Finland, go over 20 km/h the accepted limit? They send you a ticket in mail. 80? Cops at your door. 130? The military sends a jetfighter to intercept you.
This is basically Dwight from the office, isn't it...
I live in Waterford, and our public schools are backed up with Pontiac and detriot kids because of the school system. Yay.
Dearborn Public Schools are probably just as bad, if not worse. I just think the entire educational system here needs a major reform. There's a reason the United States is ranked underneath Korea, Mexico, and Poland in education..
Why the fuck do you need security at a libr... ...oh.
with the way detroit's police situation is, I'm surprised they didn't give him a little training and let him continue
