Small nations to be hit hardest by more acidic oceans
Food security problems caused by climate change and ocean acidification will hit small island and coastal nations hardest, environmental group Oceana said on Monday.
The Comoros islands in the Indian Ocean headed the non-profit group's rankings of nations most vulnerable to the combined effects of higher carbon dioxide emissions and ocean temperatures, and the increasing acidity of the world's water.
Nations that depend heavily on seafood as a source of protein may face increased food insecurity, with shellfish like oysters, clams and mussels particularly vulnerable, it said.
Togo, the Cook Islands, Kirbati, and Eritrea rounded out the report's top five.
"Most of the nations that will suffer have done very little to cause climate change," the study's author, marine scientist Matthew Huelsenbeck, said, noting those hardest hit rely on small-scale fishermen who are not equipped to chase retreating fish into colder, deeper, and more distant waters.
The report coincided with the third 'Symposium on the Ocean in a High CO2 World' in the Californian coastal town of Monterey, which is addressing increased ocean acidification.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is due to report in 2014 on ocean acidification, which the symposium estimated had advanced by 30 percent since the start of the industrial revolution.
Climate change was projected to worsen over the next half-decade, and fishing industries in the United States and developed nations would suffer too, the Oceana report showed.

It's so nice to see such good news related to ocean and climate science in the news lately.
strange that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer both on terms of climate and geo-political matters.

Tough shit. Go buy a senator or something.

Are you this ignorant intentionally or do you just not realize it?

It was a joke, predicated on the fact that corporations and companies that have a vested interest in pro-environmental measures make anonymous campaign donations to representatives who then lobby for them in office and when they leave.
Poe's law except with idiocy i guess.

I don't know, one of the richest is Norway and also one of the hardest to be hit by this. A fishing nation entirely reliant on its coast, the 7th biggest coastline in the world for the 61st largest country.

Worst of all, those island nations. They'll have some hard times coming up.
I wish acids didn't exist on earth. I bet life would be much better if acids did not exist.

stomach acid

There wouldn't be any life, owing to the fact DNA IS an acid
There wouldn't be any life, owing to the fact DNA IS an acid
there would also be no stomachs

lol

Definitely a joke.
Well pessimistic humans and pathetic lifeforms that make themselves weak to acid. Why don't we evolve to be ACIDIC.
Plus these Acid rain, acid seas, acid lands will never be solved because man kind is too greedy, too lazy, too stupid to do anything about it and animals and plants are too slow to adapt. This is why earth is a failure.

In fact, why don't we all live in a world where everything is full of Alkaline.

Well I don't know, deoxyribonucleic acid is pretty important.

Hence why he probably thought it would be better!
