They were seen on one of Scotland's busiest stretches of road at the exit for Motherwell and Hamilton before they were told they were breaking the law. The junction is close to Strathclyde Park, which hosts the triathlon events on Thursday and Sunday. "The cyclists were advised to get off the road," Police Scotland said.
I thought you were allowed to cycle on all motorways in the UK?
Do you guys not have the obnoxious as christ "SHARE THE ROAD" signs in the UK?
Nah, we have this -
Nah, we have this -
Is that.. An actual sign?
Is that.. An actual sign?
Never seen it but all those rules are true nontheless
Is that.. An actual sign?
Makes sense. It's illegal to cycle on motorways in the Netherlands too, so this shouldn't be a surprise for you.
You'll typically see the European standard, which is the motorway symbol there and the motorway number, the full sign which lists the limitations are generally found just before you pull onto the sliproad to get on.
Nah, we have this -
What's a pedal-cycle? and km/h?
Makes sense. It's illegal to cycle on motorways in the Netherlands too, so this shouldn't be a surprise for you.
I was asking if they actually had massive signs like that up along motorways, I wasn't surprised at not being allowed to cycle on them.
253 Prohibited vehicles.
Is that.. An actual sign?
Never seen one on any of our roads, but I feel like it should be there. I see cyclists relatively often on motorways, I have to wonder how stupid you have to be to do it. When you've got vehicles having to slow down hard so they can change lane and go around you (or worse, and trying to overtake you without changing lane), you're quite clearly creating a problem. Although having said that, cycling on dual carriageways is apparently legal, and it feels like just as much of a problem there, so who knows.
There's one outside Edinburgh, that's the only place I've seen one, and the only reason I know the sign exists Actually, looks like they updated it, probably because the old one was too wordy.
I thought you were allowed to cycle on all motorways in the UK?
No it's illegal to even stop on the hard shoulder (unless it's an emergency) even then you have to leave your car and sit behind the barrier until you are rescued [editline]23rd July 2014[/editline]
There's one outside Edinburgh, that's the only place I've seen one, and the only reason I know the sign exists Actually, looks like they updated it, probably because the old one was too wordy.
Those signs are normally when a dual carriageway turns into a motorway, because those are allowed on dual carriageways so the sign is telling them to leave at the next exit. Sometimes you see signs like this on some dual carriageways:

The one that comes to mind is in Dover, at the start of a motorway. Maybe they are only at the ends of them.
