So I will be going off to university soon, major in computer science, not exactly sure what I will be doing, but it will be involving computers so I want to invest in a good one. I have up to 3,000$ to spend if I must, although I would like to keep it in the 2,000 range. I have a list of parts that I may like to have, all of this is changeable, this is my first build so all opinions are welcome. I need, well everything. So heres what I have so far.
Case:

Basic 1 TB hdd:

DVD Drive:

Mouse:

Keyboard:

RAM:

GPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.429655
(I've heard this is pretty good, if I can get a better deal by purchasing two 5870s or 5850s to take advantage of crossfire, I do a LOT of gaming.)
OS:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116762
(Yeah I know the only thing different from Ultimate and Pro is the encryption software and language pack, but I wanted it because of the encryption software so why not spend a bit extra?)
CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103849
(Yeah I know do I really need 6 cores? Probably not, but who knows. I won't be getting another computer anytime soon so it may come in handy, you guys most likely will convince me either to switch to Intel, or just get the quad core.)
Fan:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154009
(I was actually looking into water cooling, if someone can tell me more about that I would appreciate it.)
PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182188
Mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130274
(I'm not sure which Mobo to get, so tell me your opinions on it)
Anything else I need? Just leave a comment, this is my first build like I said.
I would ask you, do you really need that displayport to VGA adapter? Because if you don't need it, basically what you are doing is that you are spending $25 to save $15.
I was considering the idea of dual monitors, still fiddling with that though.
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=11180454
This will be more than sufficient for your needs.
The keyboard and mouse may be to your desire, because I don't buy gamer mice/keyboards so I don't know much about them.
[editline].[/editline]
You can throw an extra 5870 in there if you want but I'm telling you it'll be a waste of money.

You can do dual monitors without that adapter. But if you want 3 monitors, then I think you need one.

Interesting, I'd like your to talk about it more, I am more of a fan of AMD, that is my current CPU provider besides Intel is a bit more expensive, especially for quad core, it may just be easier to go with AMD.

I prefer AMD myself but the most common choice for a gaming rig is usually an i5-750. Besides, you're not going to use six cores unless you're going to be doing some serious CAD or something similar, but if you want I'll throw together an AMD 6 core build.

Go with this.
Get an 800W PSU though, so you can CrossfireX later on.

Well I have the money to spend, and I hope to get all that I can out of this build and not have to worry about upgrading for a very long time.
Just spend $1000 on a build then save the rest to upgrade when new cards and stuff come out.

In that case I suppose I can let the six year old kid in me free once again :v:

(I personally would do what Jah said instead of waste your money on this build, however)

Interesting, this is a hard decision. Do you not like the case I currently chose? I am trying to get a theme going on here, haha. Also I haven't used an SSD before, I'm assuming its used mainly for booting the OS? Two 5850s or one 5970, hard choice. I'm still trying to decide if I should stick with AMD, the main reason is it is very cheap compared to Intel, and still has amazing results, so unless theres a huge reason why I should go with Intel instead of AMD I will most likely stick with the latter.
(I wouldn't really consider this a "waste")

The case you chose is a good case, but a 5970 wouldn't fit in a 900 and CF'ed cards would likely result in heat issues. Yes, the SSD is mainly for booting the OS, also I would once again consider AMD myself but I wouldn't go with a 6-core.
Only 4 GB of ram?
The case you chose is a good case, but a 5970 wouldn't fit in a 900 and CF'ed cards would likely result in heat issues. Yes, the SSD is mainly for booting the OS, also I would once again consider AMD myself but I wouldn't go with a 6-core.
I considered the heat issue, that is why I was curious about water cooling, even though that might be going over-the-top for cooling. The reason I chose a 6 core was that AMD offers them at very low prices, since even the 6-core AMD is cheaper than some of the quad core Intels. And like I said this will be lasting me for a while so who knows where the current need for CPU power will be in a few years. Yeah, the size issue of the case and the 5970 may be an issue. I am very bad at making big choices, well, not bad it is just that I take a very long time making a choice. I do all the research I can, haha.
You'll have to ask someone else about watercooling. The reason being, I don't know anything whatsoever about watercooling. If you want the AMD 6-Core, I suppose that's fine, but you won't notice any performace difference between oh say a 955 unless you were to be doing CAD or something.
Only 4 GB of ram?
You're never going to use more than 4GB of RAM unless you're doing CAD or rendering ludicrously realistic crap :eng101:
I recently got a 6 core, hopefully won't have to upgrade anytime soon, the same as yours, to be exact!

How is it? I am still trying to decide whether to go with Intel or AMD, because I may go with quad core, I'm just not sure.
Get an AMD Quad Core.
Get the 955 Black Edition Deneb, overclock it to 3.6-3.8 with a good CPU cooler and you are set for your CPU.
Since money isn't really an issue, go with the 5970 so you don't have to worry about space and heat from crossfire. I wouldn't bother with a costly SSD card, since for an OS it isn't really going to make a very noticeable difference... You would have to get a huge [extremely over priced] SSD to put all your games on it and notice anything loading faster, a small SSD isn't gonig to hold much with an OS on it already and games reaching the 10GB+ mark these days. Just get a few fast HDDs and you will be set.
Then make sure you get a nice big case with lots of cooling options, and make use of good airflow, water cooling isn't required, it's jsut for enthusiasts who want to waste money on high performance that get's them nothing in the long run.
You can make a "dream machine" for a lot less than 3000 dollars, you only need max $2000 for a great long lasting PC.
I suggest the i5 750 over the Phenom II X4. It's only $20 more, and tit for tat it performs better. At it's base clock speed it competes on an even footing with the Phenom II 965, overclocking it shows a larger gain in performance.
Also, If your willing to go with a 5970, might as well get SLI GTX470s for roughly the same base price. They will run slightly hotter and do draw more energy, but offer a far better performance.
I should probably mention that this is for both gaming and work.

Why the fuck do you keep recommending A-SHIT and the V8?
[editline]05:25PM[/editline]
And combo deals do exist, you know.
Hyper 212+s perform better than v8s by miles
Hyper 212+s perform better than v8s by miles
No no no no no no no no. That's something you really need to get through your fucking head. The 212+ is a gigantic, over priced piece of shit for anyone in the US.
[editline]06:04PM[/editline]
And it doesn't outperform the V8 by miles, more like 2C.
Well i didn't realise it was gigantic. Sorry i didn't check the US prices, i was basing it on the UK prices.
As for performance:

[editline]11:10PM[/editline]
And it's in the same position for max oc
hardware canucks, if you bothered to look around for 5 minutes, always has completely incorrect figures, just like hardoc.

Well i'm sticking with hardware canucks :coolbert:
Though tomshardware is better

This

what the fuck is wrong with them is that there are better products for the same price
[editline]12:53AM[/editline]
also, before you reply with something about 1600MHz, i5 750s at stock don't even support any higher than 1333
