Whenever flash is in use, my iowait skyrockets. I have now resorted to downloading any flash based videos and playing them with vlc. If you have any ideas, let me know.

By flash, I'm sure you're referring to youtube... So use a webkit browser for html5 support, and un install flash.

I'm not sure that's the best assumption. There's a lot of popular flash-based streaming media sites out there these days, Hulu being a notable example.
