Syrian fatwa issued: You may eat cats and dogs to stave off hunger if truly needed, despite usually
(CNN) -- Muslims throughout the world have been marking Eid al-Adha, but in war-torn Syria there is little to celebrate as most people struggle to meet their basic needs: food, water, and shelter.
Their plight has been highlighted by Arabic media reports that cite a fatwa, or religious ruling, by a local imam that allows people who are desperately hungry to eat dogs and cats.
Eating dog, cat or donkey is forbidden under Islamic dietary laws.
The imam in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in the capital, Damascus, reportedly said at a mosque Friday that dog, cat and donkey meat could be eaten "after reaching a desperate need and the stores of food were inadequate to feed the population under the siege."
Yarmouk has been besieged for months by Syrian government forces seeking to flush out rebel fighters.
During the Eid al-Adha holiday, one of Islam's most revered observances, Muslims around the world sacrifice sheep and share the meat with the poor. It corresponds with the height of the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia that annually draws 2 million Muslims.
A YouTube video purports to show a group of religious leaders outside Damascus issuing a fatwa permitting the eating of cats, kittens, donkeys, and animals killed in shelling.
This image is pretty haunting, a man praying before he heads into battle. I wonder if he is still alive.

I thought all Muslims know that you can basically eat anything if there's no food around.
Hell you can even eat dead humans if you can't even find the forbidden meat

They can eat pork under extreme conditions. This fatwa is just reiterating the obvious.

They can eat unclean food if forced to...
Although, I'm not sure whether starvation would meet that requirement, or if it must be under the duress of another person..

Refusing to eat unclean food and therefore starving would surely be suicide?
You're making a conscious decision that you know will lead to your death, and I reckon most people would take sinning + living over sinning + dying.

that's what they are supposed to be really, they aren't allowed to change the rules
Well, this is what war is. This is what it leaves behind. And what's worst is that we don't know which side will bring the best out of Syria; it might just be me, but the conflict seems like a huge grey area where there probably aren't any good guys or bad guys, just two groups fighting for what direction they think the country should take.
There won't be anything left of this country when it's all said and done. It's depressing to think that somewhere on this rock there's a nation with such rich history and cultural identity tearing itself apart.
