That’s why we’re simplifying your PC experience down to one app that you can use either with your mouse and keyboard or with touch. Starting on July 7, we’re updating PC users of the Windows modern application to the Windows desktop application, and retiring the modern application. With the upcoming release of Windows 10 for PCs, it makes sense to use the Skype application optimized for mouse and keyboards use, capable of doing touch as well rather than 2 separate applications performing the same function.
Now fix Skype for Business please because it's performance is fucking shocking and my whole thing freezes when someone new pops up to me.
good, the app was a pile of dogshit
I didn't even give it a chance. Metro sucks.
I always felt the desktop program was really clunky. The Skype app worked quite well and ran smooth for me.
Don't get me wrong: the desktop app sucks too. Interpreting that suck into metro sucks harder.
I didn't even give it a chance. Metro sucks.
Would constantly lag out and crash, calls never came through properly and if you had the win32 version running at the same time as the metro app, and you got a call - you accepted it on desktop, it would keep ringing on the metro app for 5 minutes. Also just generally sucked I wish they brought back photo sharing from MSN, where like the chat would transform into a gallery of user uploaded pictures, that was the best feature about MSN and idk why ms hasn't brought it over yet
thank god the metro app was awful
The metro app is so bad. If you alt-tab away, the video drops completely if the other person is using a Samsung Smart TV and won't return unless you redial. The Linux version has no such issues
I still don't get how Skype can be sitting on ~100mb of RAM when it's doing literally nothing except for waiting for phone calls
I didn't even give it a chance. Metro sucks.
I love metro and even I wanted to murder whoever the hell thought that was a good idea or in any way acceptable in fact all of the apps were terrible why would a computer have apps omg
I love metro and even I wanted to murder whoever the hell thought that was a good idea or in any way acceptable in fact all of the apps were terrible why would a computer have apps omg
Metro looks kinda nice and live tiles are hella neat (although why there's no functionality to throw a web page into a live tile, crop/position it and see at a glance my subscribed threads on FP/DA/whatever I don't know) but using the apps themselves is ridiculously fiddly and intrusive unless you're on a TV or tablet
I hope they improve performance for the desktop version now, it's a memory hog and is quite slow from time to time.

"app" is just the shorthand for "application". Any client facing program is a fucking app and vice versa. Most of the Metro UI apps I've seen work fairly well, some have some pretty cool features the desktop app could do with. But the Skype one? Holy shit that was a mess from start to finish. Somehow the barely maintained Linux version works better.

I used to call any application an 'app', but for the past few years we've been moving steadily towards using 'app' for tablet/phone-style full-screen-assed applications, and 'programs' for desktop-style applications. It's kind of unfortunate and 'applet' will always be the cutest fucking word ever, but it's just a part of linguistic change and the simplification of communication
Now fix Skype for Business please because it's performance is fucking shocking and my whole thing freezes when someone new pops up to me.
Skype for business is just a reskinned Lync 2013. It's no honest surprise it performs like ass.
HTML Ads and home-front. it's gotta go somewhere speaking of which I hope that this gives them more time to make the desktop client fucking stable and more secure SICK OF REBOOTING THE MEDIA PC WHENEVER WE TRY AND GET A SKYPE CALL GOING THERE
Does Skype still run ads? I haven't seen any in forever.
I don't understand how one of the most powerful and rich companies in the world can't make a simple communications app fucking work correctly, and on top, fill it with shitty ads that aren't even filtered. I just don't fucking get it.
Skype credits are a thing. Not to mention Microsoft rakes in billions yearly. [editline]12th June 2015[/editline] Anyway, my complaint isn't that they have ads, but that the ads aren't filtered. There has been several cases of people getting fucking malware from the ads on Skype. And that like I said, Skype runs like dicks and is just badly made overall.
I only ever opened the metro app by accident. Then again Skype is totally fucked for me, it opens up and crashes every time, reinstalling doesn't work either.
Sucks that I'm pretty much forced to use skype for certain people. If I had it my way I'd only have to use mumble for voice chat.
Anyone remember Skype a few versions before Microsoft got hold of it? Ran like a dream.
Does anyone actually bother using Metro apps? It may just be my toaster, but they all load extremely slow. [sp]I still love the metro design and wouldn't ever go back to the old start button[/sp]
best possible experience my ass, look at this blurry shit
Does Skype still run ads? I haven't seen any in forever.
Yeah. There was a huge shit storm about it a year or 2 ago.

Not Windows 10's fault. I am running it on a Surface, which is a high-DPI screen, which Skype does not support - so my options are either to have the app be absolutely tiny and hard to use (especially with touch), or this blurry mess.
you can edit the ui xml thingy, make it read only and get rid of the ads found a tutorial on reddit
Oooh holy shit does anyone else get this bug where, if you set your DP on say your laptop it'll look super good But if you go to say your desktop, it's blurry as shit?
one of my friends modified his skype.exe to remove ads. i find it weird that skype.exe is in a folder named phone
