Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, will begin on Sunday in Saudi Arabia, the state-run Al-Ekhbariya television channel reported on Friday.
Citing the authorities, it said that because the crescent moon was unable to be seen with the naked eye on Friday, Ramadan would begin on Sunday.
According to tradition, it is the sighting with the naked eye of the new moon that signals the start of Ramadan.
Other Gulf monarchies, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates also said Ramadan will start in their countries on Sunday.
Yemen's religious authorities said in a statement that fasting would begin on Saturday.
During this month, Muslim believers abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex from dawn until sunset.
Ramadan is sacred to Muslims because it is during that month that tradition says the Koran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed.
The fast is one of the five main religious obligations under Islam.
so I take it there won't be long line ups in fast food restaurant's during this time or will they close shop.
allahu malnourishment
so I take it there won't be long line ups in restaurant's during this time or will you get thrown in jail for trying.?
...what?
...what?
what a lovely place to live.
I'm not fasting but i may get beat up&knifed if i try to eat outside
Eat a beautiful pork chop outside, and make some horrible pun about pigging out or something.
I hate myself during this period. Cause I might hangout with my muslim friends, and then drink in front of em, then remembered that its ramadan and they can't eat or drink till sun down.

Can you at least drink water? I remember a girl telling me she can't, and that seems really unhealthy in a Mediterranean climate in summer.

It doesn't look nice when you're doing in front of em, and some might think you're doing it on purpose.
When I lived in Abu Dhabi, Ramadan was fucking horrible.

No meat to eat right?

I always find it funny when my chinese friends go all apologetic for eating. We don't care if you wanna eat or not, your choice, your religion.

Cause we feel bad (yes even though we have different religions). It just feels not good/wrong when you are doing it in front of em.
Like I feel bad eating beef in front of my hindu/buddhist friends.
On a worst case, they might feel like you are spiteful to them. Like doing it on purpose. Like for example, you might give em the impression
"you can order everything else on the menu but you decide to order beef/pork in front of me, of all days?!"
Ramadan is pretty fucking annoying if you're not someone that practices fasting.
All the restaurants close, and when they actually open (and you perhaps want to go out) they're choick-full of people noshing their way through a days worth of calories. Then there's the fact that the majority of them get up early, eat a shed-load of food for the day and then do even less than they usually do because their blood sugar levels are low before clocking off early to sit at home and wait for the sun to go down.
It's a bit of a joke really.
It's so awkward making a round of drinks at work during Ramadan - when you accidentally forget and ask someone who's observing it if they would like a cup of tea, they look at you with a real 'fuck you' look..

I think my point (and butt's) is that it's annoying for people just trying to get on with their lives. I can deal with it, yeh, but shops closing for most of the day just disrupts everything.
Supermarkets are still open, of course, but if I'd want to go out at any point then either the place is shut or absolutely heaving to the point where it's not enjoyable.
I'm not fasting but i may get beat up&knifed if i try to eat outside
I call bullshit, man. I'm from a country that practices Sharia law, and even there it isn't as bad as you say. Obviously drinking or eating in public is stupid, but to get knifed or beaten up over it? lol The worst that'd happen is some people tell you to stop being so inconsiderate.
In my old school, they'd have a classroom at lunch where people who weren't fasting could go and eat. It's not a huge deal. If you seriously can't go an hour or two without eating or drinking, it's pretty pathetic (I'm talking about finding somewhere you can eat, not fasting the whole day with everyone else).
Companies that have a large workforce of expatriates make exceptions for the workers, and allow them to go to a lunch room to eat. Ramadan doesn't mean everyone is forced to fast. Just don't go walking around in the street eating a sandwich, and you'll be fine. Most restaurants are closed anyways, so why you'd be walking around eating a sandwich in public, rather than eating it in your office / house / wherever is beyond me.
allahu malnourishment
Ramadan is pretty much just intermittent fasting, no malnourishment here.
My girlfriend who digs middle eastern culture is practicing this and she is super skinny and is on her feet all day so she has zero fat stores to hold her over during the day and just like why
It's hilarious how food consumption goes up every year in Sweden around Ramadan. "Fasting", yeah not exactly if they end up eating more food.
I'll be participating in the fasting aspect. Since I fuckulated my back so much I can't exercise, why not at least try to get a little closer to the Muslim community? I plan on visiting the Mosque sometime before the month's out.
i dunno how to fit my exercise plan with fasting so i'm gonna have to drop it and pick it back up in august
[editline]28th June 2014[/editline]
and i'll probably just not eat a lot during community iftars which sucks b/c people make some really good food
-snip to avoid people getting offended, sorry Facepunch-
at least in dubai:
ramadan would come, all the muslims would be miserable / pissy, then comes 8 o'clock when the cannon fires and suddenly every single muslim is stuffing their face with a huge feast. You can also be arrested in dubai for eating/drinking outside in public
Ramadan kareem everyone

Note to self "fuckulated"
I pig out at iftar sometimes, Idk why people choose to make such good food only during ramadan.
