Nintendo has announced it made a ¥41 billion ($350 million) profit for the fiscal year ending March 31, returning the company to an annual profit for the first time in four years.
According to its latest fiscal report, global sales of the Nintendo 3DS family, which includes the 2DS, reached 8.73 million units. The New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL were said to have "got off to a good start and continued to sell well." Previous models, however, "did not grow as anticipated."
Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS reached 9.94 million units and 6.8 million units respectively. Nintendo described the performance of these two titles as "robust."
Meanwhile, Tomodachi Life, Mario Kart 7, and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, meanwhile, showed steady sales, each selling more than two million units. Overall, Nintendo 3DS software for the fiscal year reached 62.7 million units.
Global sales of Wii U hardware reached 3.38 million units, while software was cited as 24.4 million units. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U had sales of 5.11 million units and 3.65 million units respectively.
we need a *it's printing money* gif, but with amiibos instead
still probably not making as much money as the people that resell short-stocked amiibo in bulk
Yet, even today, you can hear the distant echoes of the pessimistic saying: "Nintendo is doomed!"
Joke's aside, I'm glad they are getting back on track.

The best part is nintendo has been doomed since 1986
did i read that wrong or did smash bros sale for wiiu sell more than the wiiu did
Wait Nintendo was doing poorly for the past 4 years?
I had literally no idea, what the hell.

Holy fuck, I remember that skit.
I don't understand how with Nintendo's history of taking 'failures' and making shitloads of money with it anyone still goes 'they're gonna fail'.

THEY'RE STILL DOOMED!!! MAKING A PROFIT MEANS IT'S ALL DOWNHILL FROM HERE!!! THEY NEED TO SELL ALL THEIR IPs AND START MAKING MOBILE GAMES BECAUSE THAT'S THE ONLY THING I OWN!!!
[sp]i've actually seen an article with this reasoning. gaming journalists are the worst[/sp]
did i read that wrong or did smash bros sale for wiiu sell more than the wiiu did
maybe its old people who bought it for their grand-kids thinking it might work on their original wii
did i read that wrong or did smash bros sale for wiiu sell more than the wiiu did
People who had a wii u already bought it, that's just units shipped this year

And IIRC, when Nintendo posted their first loss 4 years ago, it was their first loss since they got into videogames (or something like that).
Nintendo was (and is) in an insanely solid financial situation. People who say they are doomed make me want to murder.

No joke, the gaf thread about this still had a few people clamoring for them to go to mobile. Thankfully the bigname one got banned (who had been on this shit for months), after being piled on by rational people saying how silly they were arguing that.

But then we won't see characters that turned into terrible monstrosities smashing windows, climbing out of TVs and suddenly pull a huge sprint to a window!

Still think the gamecube controller is some shit.

While "Nintendo is doomed!" may be going overboard (or well, it is), calling it a joke is stupid. The Wii U is still selling like shit, and this news is about Nintendo turning its first annual profit in 4 years.
Not to mention Monster Hunter being a rising series here in the West, i think just in America alone it's sold over a million units, but i wouldn't quote me on that. Hell, i got a 3DS specifically so i could play Monster Hunter and have 4U and 3U for both 3DS and WiiU.

So, it's good news then! Means they aren't doing as bad as some people think they are. Right?
And the Wii U is not the central pillar that holds Nintendo up. There's other pillars of various sizes, like the merchandise, the Amiibos, the 3DS, the VC (which they could push further), etc. It did badly in it's first years, like a clumsy runner who didn't lace his shoes correctly at the start of the race and keeps tripping along the road but I still think it can do decently.
They got the train back up and running at a decent speed after 4 years. Not that bad, considering their weird track records of questionable decisions over the past 3 decades.
Oh, and yes. It's a joke. A big, fat, greasy joke that is hilarious every time I see it.
Nintendo is at a point where it would take some seriously out of the blue shit to actually shut them down. They have so many stakes it's unbelievable. They own more shit than people realize, including a baseball team. I don't believe that unless there was a serious company wide dark period among a majority of their services (unlikely) or some sort of huge potentially legal scandal happened that they could be shut down.

Okay slightly off topic then. I just got a N3DSXL (nice acronym) and I'm looking for games. Looks like the price of 3U is $20 on Amazon. Is it worth it?
Okay slightly off topic then. I just got a N3DSXL (nice acronym) and I'm looking for games. A used game shop is selling Monster Hunter 3U for like $25. Is it worth it?
That's kind of a hard one, honestly. 4U has better systems, different monsters, two new weapons, online multiplayer and a bunch of other stuff. 3U, however, has an almost entirely different roster of monsters, areas, etc. So it's sort of a yes, sort of a no. It's good, but you might spring for 4U instead.

If you want some other opinions, i'd hop on over to the Monster Hunter General in the GGD, they're good folks.

Noted. Maybe I'll just save up for 4U then.

Are we still counting Resident Evil: Revelations? Or is that now a resounding meh as of Revelations 2? Guess there's also the HD version, so never mind.
But yeah, if you absolutely need a good 3DS title, you can't go wrong with MH4U.
The thing about Nintendo is that they're smart with their money. They have a war chest that they can live off for many a year and that's what they've been doing. Now it's time to slowly build that chest back up.
Who knew holding on to fundamentals of gaming was such an amazing idea?
Meaning that usually Nintendo remembers that gaming is a form of entertainment that's meant to be a fun, recreative and sometimes cathartic activity that helps relax or challenge a player's skills without being frustrating.
It helps that their titles seem to go through serious playtesting.
They're a little not too frustrating lately, though. A lot of the recent games were super hand-holdy, It felt like shopping with my mom when I was 5 years old.
At least they don't remind you to take a break every 10 minutes now, that's an improvement.
In Awakening, you may have the characters comment on the player's presence in the Barracks depending on real life time of day by saying good morning if it's morning, or wondering why the player's still awake at midnight. The key is to make the reminders somehow endearing.
While "Nintendo is doomed!" may be going overboard (or well, it is), calling it a joke is stupid. The Wii U is still selling like shit, and this news is about Nintendo turning its first annual profit in 4 years.
According to a 2012 quote, Nintendo has around 813 billion yen in the bank, which equals around ~6.8 billion USD with current exchange rates. They can literally afford to lose 20 billion yen ($~166m) a year every year until 2052 from 2012 onward.
To put that in perspective, Capcom, a company that actually is struggling somewhat financially, only has $155m USD in the bank in TOTAL according to a 2013 quote. Nintendo can literally lose an amount of money in one year that Would put current Capcom into near bankruptcy, and then they could keep doing that for another 49 years before getting in deep trouble.
So no, saying that Nintendo is doomed IS a complete joke and will continue to be a massive misconception unless they somehow magically do shit-all for the next ~50 years on a grandiose scale. Even if they continuously posted 40b yen losses like in 2012 and 2013, they'd still be fine for another 25 years even.
WHenever complaints of their demise come in, they release a new Zelda, Pokemon, or Mario game.
While that's good news and all, you'd be just as mentally challenged to be smug about Nintendo making a profit again when it's less than a single call of duty game makes on launch day and it's after posting losses for 4 straight years :v:
I'm glad to see them making a profit again though because although I haven't really been happy with what Nintendo's been putting out for a long time Sony and Microsoft are so similar that a market without Nintendo would be a bit narrow
