Doesn't the "fair use" article in copyright laws include "nonprofit educational use"?
So they could've ignored the takedown notice since a potential lawsuit would never have held in court.
But I guess one problem could be that the defendant wouldn't have been able to afford the legal fees. Which makes the current legal system complete shit, since you just have to threaten someone with a lawsuit even if what they are doing is fine.
The DMCA can burn in hell.
