ARBUTUS, MARYLAND -- Mitt Romney said Wednesday that former President George W. Bush deserves credit for averting total economic collapse, not President Obama.Romney delivered a passionate defense of the 2008 bank bailouts at a town hall here, aligning himself with the still-unpopular former president in the process.
"I keep hearing the president say that he's responsible for keeping America from going into a Great Depression," Romney said. "No, no, no. That was President George W. Bush and [then-Treasury Secretary] Hank Paulson."
Though Romney has previously spoken in support of the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the full-throated defense, and the credit he gave to Bush, were surprising and seemed to open a new front in what's likely to be a major theme of the general election -- the relitigating of Bush's record in office. Democrats frequently point to Bush's policies as the source of the economy's continued tribulations, while Republicans say Obama hasn't done enough, or hasn't done the right things, to turn it around.
During the 2008 crash, Romney said, "President Bush and Hank Paulson said, 'We've got to do something to show we're not going to let the whole system go out of business.' I think they were right. I know some people disagree with me, but I think they were right to do that."
Though the bailout was seen as a necessary emergency measure at the time -- and was supported by a broad bipartisan consensus that included then-Senator Obama -- "bailouts" have since become a dirty word and one of the animating hatreds of the Tea Party.
Romney might have been inspired by his morning's interaction with another member of the Bush family. Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor and powerful GOP force, endorsed Romney Wednesday morning, in a powerful signal that the Republican establishment is ready to anoint Romney as the nominee in the wake of his big win in Illinois on Tuesday.

he also saved us from having a surplus, god knows those had to go when he took over from clinton
Saved means AVOIDED, Mitt.
Wasnt he basicly the one that put us into all of this bullshit?

Like basicly ALL of it?
if it weren't for Bush, the housing market would have collapsed
if it weren't for Bush, the housing market would have collapsed
I thought it did? There were like foreclosures all over the news for awhile.
im a republican so i agree with him:eng101:
mitt romney that is
What? He basically led us into the recession..and left it up to Obama to pick up the pieces and take the ensuing flak.
The republican party sure is home to some of the dumbest that our species has managed to conjure.
I don't think Bush could have fucked us that hard in eight years

i completely agree with you im showing shitty sarcasm though i am a republican
-snip-
Lots of people are so stupid that they will believe this and use it as a basis for voting along with something else fucking ignorant like "he's white" or "my daddy met him once"
Democracy doesn't end well if the majority of the demos are fucking retarded cunts.
Wait... I thought Romney was somewhat smart...
He did sign TARP into law which did avert a huge (huger than the one we got) financial recession.

Just like the people who blame things happening now on Obama, you can't blame everything that happened on Bush.
There are a lot more people in Washington trying to make things happen other than just the president.
if it weren't for Bush, the housing market would have collapsed
Except it did. :v:
More like doomed us into another depression, heh.
biggest lie on the planet
Someone remind me again, why are people are voting for this retard?
Someone remind me again, why are people are voting for this retard?
Because the Bible and because pinkos.
I've met the stereotypical sort of people who vote Republican in person, one of them comes over and (literally) preaches about how Obama is driving our nation to the ground every other weekend. And ends every other sentence with "amen".
The nation should also be grateful for Bush pulling the troops out of Iraq, from that war that was started by, uh, that guy before him, whoever he was.
too bad george bush can't save me from the depression i get hearing republican candidates talk.
Bush saving us from a depression is about is likely as Obama saving us from a depression.

It makes more sense than saying Obama caused it all within the first couple months of his presidency.
Though the truth is that this has been brewing since the Reagen years, but Bush did help light the fuse.

No president for the next few years will just magically save you from a depression, considering how fucked up basically the entire world is economically right now. But Obama is certainly going to have a impact on it, for better or for worse (currently, better than Bush would have if he was still in power).

It makes perfect sense to blame almost all of it on previous presidents as the effects of their economic policies can take a while to reach a noticeable magnitude. Kinda why it looks like Obamas done shit, the policies he could get through have 8 years of Bush to trim.

It's quite depressing that our country is controlled by two giant incompetent and corrupt political parties.
Either way, we're doomed to fail. The only difference is that we get to pick whether there's a (D) or an (R) next to the name of the man who ultimately drives our nation into the ground.
