VILLA PARK, Ill. (AP) - Comparing their campaign to the civil rights movement, fast food workers from across the country voted Saturday to escalate their efforts for $15-an-hour pay and union membership by using nonviolent civil disobedience.More than 1,300 workers gathered in a convention in center in suburban Chicago to discuss the future of a campaign that has spread to dozens of cities in less than two years. Wearing T-shirts that said "Fight for $15" and "We Are Worth More," the workers cheered loudly and said they would win if they stuck together.
These people are out of their fuckin' minds if they think they're going to get paid fifteen fucking dollars an hour for flipping burgers.
Yes, I wholeheartedly agree that the wage needs to be adjusted, but 15$? Jesus. I'm only making 8.59 an hour as an assistant department-manager at a grocery store, does this mean I get my wage doubled too?
I make $16 working IT, $15 for flipping burgers is insane. At least up here minimum is $11, though.
It's a negotiation tactic.
You ask for more than you actually want, so that way when those you are asking to increase your wage say "No, how about X amount of dollars instead", that X amount is what you really want.
$15 is better than most manual labor jobs. My brother works at Chick-fil-A and I believe he makes $8.50 an hour. $15 is way too much.
I've been trying to get a job at Costco since I was 15 years old, since their starting pay is almost 12$.
It's been five years ;-;
Let's start with getting orders right before we talk about raises.

if the minimum wage is increased then yes, you would make more money that's kind of what a minimum wage is lol

15 an hour is technically the amount necessary for people to actually exit poverty.
EDIT: excuse me, they actually would remain in poverty, but would earn a living wage.

You get paid $15/h for flipping burgers in Australia
I got paid $15/h for delivering pizza's
$15 is kind of pushing it.
Why is $15 pushing it?

But how will that serve the interests of the 1% who're only interested in the bottom lines and money to line their own pockets? :v:
I could cite a recent statement from the CEO of Goldman-Sachs:
Income inequality is destabilizing and "responsible for the divisions in the country," CEO and chairman of Goldman Sachs Lloyd Blankfein said on "CBS This Morning" Tuesday.
"The divisions could get wider," Blankfein said. "If you can't legislate, you can't deal with problems. [If] you can't deal with problems, you can't drive growth and you can't drive the success of the country. It's a very big issue and something that has to be dealt with."
He said one way to deal with it would be to "make the pie grow."
"Too much of the GDP over the last generation has gone to too few of the people," he said.
You can't compare Australia and US wages.

Thats like comparing apples and... gigantic car-sized spiders.
Raising minimum wage is a good thing. Obviously they shouldn't get $15 an hour, but i think they should have a boost. Since i'm Australian my own views towards wages a skewed.

tbh if giant spiders were a thing we'd probably see a Steve Irwin dedicated to filming such creatures (rest his soul in peace)
Jesus christ this happens every time this shit is brought up.
They do not actually expect $15/hr. It is a bargaining tactic. They want to be made a more reasonable counter offer, so they set their 'expectation' high so the corporations can feel like they've won when they 'talk them down' to something more reasonable.
Is their labour not worth a living wage or something?

15 is minimum wage in Seattle.
[editline]oh hamburgers[/editline]
Will be, rather.

I get $20/hour to flip burgers
I get $20/hour to flip burgers
tbf the australian minimum wage (assuming from your flag) is already just a hair under seventeen dollars an hour.
-snip-
My opinion has been voiced a few times already.

Ignoring they're paying more for everything since their minimum wage is higher than most places.
why is every thread about wage increases and unions in facepunch utterly horrible :downs:
It's a negotiation tactic.

glad to see someone who actually understands.

It used to be a negotiation tactic.
Then far too many people thought that $15/hr sounded really good and was totally doable and now refuse to negotiate any lower.
I'll never understand why anyone who isn't a greedy rich person would be against people making a living wage at a full time job
I mean, I work fast food, and I don't think I deserve anywhere NEAR $15/hr. Granted, I wouldn't turn it down if offered, but expecting that much for work that is simple enough for literally anyone out there to do with the most minimal training is a bit crazy. Minimum wage needs an increase, but expecting anything past like, maybe, 8.75-9.50 is asking for a lot for most minimum wage jobs.
tbf the australian minimum wage (assuming from your flag) is already just a hair under seventeen dollars an hour.
Also it's actually hard to find anyone here who earns the bare minimum or anywhere close it; most occupations are covered by enterprise bargaining agreements which affects the wages of both union and non-union workers. When I was 17 and working in a chicken processing plant wrapping enchiladas and dipping kebabs in sauce I was getting paid $25 per hour. I work in a supermarket now and although my minimum wage as a 19 year old is around $13 per hour, I get paid around $16.50 per hour (or $19.50 per hour if I'm called in for a shift). Then of course there is stuff like paid leave (personal and sick), 1.5x pay on Sundays and 2.5x pay on public holidays.
I'm working in McDonald's to pay off collect and make 8.75 euro an hour. It should be increased but 15 is way too much. It is hard labour especially when your in there with no air conditioning and it's like 30 degrees outside. Also you don't flip burgers in McDonald's.
