They’re turning the web into a cesspool of aggression and violence. What watching them is doing to the rest of us may be even worse
This story is not a good idea. Not for society and certainly not for me. Because what trolls feed on is attention. And this little bit–these several thousand words–is like leaving bears a pan of baklava.
It would be smarter to be cautious, because the Internet’s personality has changed. Once it was a geek with lofty ideals about the free flow of information. Now, if you need help improving your upload speeds the web is eager to help with technical details, but if you tell it you’re struggling with depression it will try to goad you into killing yourself.
So it's just how it's always been except the media is finally picking up on it?
Fuck this noise, fuddy duddys on the internet complaining for every little damn thing are ruining it tenfold.
ahh, some things never change

None of this is new, there were always jerks on the internet. The only difference i see is that today, we are actually regularly giving them attention instead of ignoring them, as we should.
Ah wait, its one of those articles describing everyone who was against feminist frequency as a misogynistic troll, i mean what else was there wrong with feminist frequency.
Yeah, just like trolls deserve no attention, neither do these articles
Overly sensitive people have ruined the internet far more than trolls ever have.

Then why are you writing it?
Now, if you need help improving your upload speeds the web is eager to help with technical details, but if you tell it you’re struggling with depression it will try to goad you into killing yourself.
Admittedly that kind of behavior is pretty fucked up, but this isn't a recent development. This has been the case for over a fucking decade. Trolls are not ruining the internet. Trolls are a part of the internet in the same way bearshit is part of the woods.
Christ on a cracker if you're depressed, go to a fucking specialist trained in helping people like you. Random assholes ARE NOT TRAINED, nor are they typically obligated, to help you with your psychological problems. Presenting your psychological problems to the unwashed masses, in a place where they are divorced from the consequences of their words and actions, is a good way to get a lot of bullshit piled up on your doorstep. I'm sorry things are like this, but that's how they are. I honestly don't know if I'd actually like any idea which makes an attempt at fixing it either, because I also like the idea of a free internet where people can speak their mind, even if it's fucked up sometimes.
What a shittily written article.
I expected better from you time
Overly sensitive people have ruined the internet far more than trolls ever have.
Yeah pretty much this.
When you Troll someone, you harass them to get a reaction, which still happens a fair bit. But within the last 4 years or so it's become the opposite. People getting mad at something and then harassing people over it because they're made themselves so angry they don't even see how dumb they're acting.
I know a lot bring up SJWs but it's not just them anymore, criticise Donald Trump or say that not all refugees are terrorists and suddenly someone wants to start an argument with you. I never see the shit that happens on the internet in real life outside of a few fringe examples which leads me to believe that most of the "reverse trolls" are just sad, lonely people who hardly go out and want to feel justified in their misery.
Overly sensitive people have ruined the internet far more than trolls ever have.
People who get offended over everything and people who feel the need to be pointlessly aggressive offenders over everything are two sides of the same obnoxious coin. It's just that one side has a stronger sense of moral superiority.
What a shittily written article.

You know, TIME used to be a pretty great mostly unbiased source, or at least one that saw both sides of an argument.
There's such a thing being too liberal, and TIME has finally fallen into that hole of slanted news reporting. It's kind of slowly turning into another borderline-tabloid trash publication.
The internet has always been a portal to mankind's id. Just because these yuppies didn't see it until reddit became popular doesn't mean it wasn't always there.

sjw culture is worse than troll culture bar none tbh
sjw culture is worse than troll culture bar none tbh
Troll culture is essentially what's enabling SJW culture half the time, though.
It's a never-ending cycle of people trying to put out fire with gasoline.

Like a snake eating its own tail.
But the snake is outrage and people are being outraged over the outrage, which causes more outrage.

One is the reason why we cant have nice things and the other going ensure we aint going have nice things.
The internet is serious business.

i'm not totally sure why but i laughed at this
Like it or not, shitposting is integral to the internet. The rise of social media and the like has just made it easier to see in the mainstream.
The people who relish this online freedom are called trolls, a term that originally came from a fishing method online thieves use to find victims.
What?
No, it came from a fishing method to fish. For actual fish.
At least partially. The fictional creature troll meaning got mixed in eventually. And arguably from the beginning, depending on where you look?
It's like they looked up "origin of the word troll", got to the first mention of the word "fishing", mistook it for "phishing", and rolled from there.

They're both the same. People who go out to harass others for a cheap thrill are cunts. People who get offended and react by harassing others for thrill are cunts, too. People who get mad at the people who get offended and react by harassing them for harassing the people who harassed them are also cunts.
It's cunts all the way down. It's outrage culture. It's being furious at ideas other people hold that you disagree with and harassing them because of it. Both "sides" do this shit and it's pathetic.
I look forward to next decade when journalism catches up another ancient staple of the Internet e.g. Rule 34.

Ohh, it's that article :v:
A few people were complaining about the original line on my Twitter feed (which was justified imo. You don't just lump in a disability with conciously awful behaviour with a blanket statement like that).

Real talk though, it does l seem the internet has got more hateful in the past couple of years. It's not as if I'm new to the internet, I've been posting here for 11 years.
Maybe it coincides with the rises of right wing politics in Europe, Donald Trump in the US.
It's entirely possible I've just softened as I've got older and see it more
I mean shit, back when usenet was relevant somebody could fucking destroy your little Amiga just for shits and giggles.
Back when a "government cybersecurity division" was only in cheap sci-fi.
I wonder how many people actually read the article in the OP because the article focuses less on "haha you're a faggot" and more of smashing a journalist's car window in, or the emergence of the alt-right and how polls show that people are afraid to speak about their opinions online because of the potential retaliation. There's a difference between fucking with someone for shits and giggles and actively making someone's life shittier.
I actually think trolls are not the problem... its people branding everyone and their cat with even the slightest dissenting opinion as a troll and a hater that is the problem... it makes everyone entrench more extremely and has given rise to the normalization of some pretty extreme opinions for the simple fact that they are grouped in with the normal ones and treated the same.
