A British Royal Naval destroyer was scrambled on Monday to "keep watch" on a Russian aircraft carrier and its escorts, the Ministry of Defense said.
The Royal Navy's Type 42 destroyer HMS York sailed from Portsmouth, southern England, to meet with Russia's Admiral Kuznetsov off the east coast of Scotland. The 65,000 ton carrier, with warships and support vessels, anchored outside British territorial waters some 30 miles off the Moray Firth, in Scotland.
The Admiral Kuznetsov "was thought to have taken advantage of the relative shelter to avoid the worst of current bad weather in the North Sea," the MOD said in a statement Tuesday.
Seems to be on its way to Syria:
Russia has dispatched the flagship of its fleet, the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov as well as the destroyer Admiral Chabanenko, to the eastern Mediterranean where it will visit a naval base Syria, in a show of support of Bashar al Assad the Syrian president facing calls for his indictment for war crimes.
The Kuznetsov was being monitored by HMS York 30 miles off the coast of Fife, Scotland, in international waters.
There's a Russian aircraft carrier 50 miles from me... that's a little disconcerting.
Because russia is gonna suddenly attack Great Britian?

Yeah because the Russians are evil terrorists who want to destroy freedom and democracy
They were in international waters, how is this news?
So, one says the Moray Firth, which is beside Inverness, and the other article says Fife, which is just a little north of Edinburgh.
That's a pretty big discrepancy right there.

Russians don't want to destroy freedom and democracy? But, Call of Duty...

ARE THE RUSSIANS NEAR SCOTLAND HERE TO STEAL OUR JOBS? WHY MUST DIANA BE DEAD.
/Daily Mail headline.
So... does anybody actually know what they're doing there exactly?

Heading to Syria, as it says in the OP.

Probably testing our alert readiness, just like in the 80s.
Or maybe not.

I mean what is it going to do once it gets there.
I'm gonna write a news article about every US fleet movement. I'm sure it won't be boring or totally uninteresting, at all.
Heading to Syria, as it says in the OP.
To defend Syria's crimes against humanity.
I mean what is it going to do once it gets there.
To stop the West stopping Syria it seems.

Wonder if they'll actually help the government at all or just play guard dog.
This is just common procedure. Just like that time when Russian strategic bombers were flying over the North Sea, they were escorted by the RAF.
Wonder if they'll actually help the government at all or just play guard dog.
The fact that they are supporting Bashar al Assad at all is despicable enough. If they do any attacks in aid of the oppressive regime then Russia is equally as horrible.
You gotta hand it to them, even though they only have one decent carrier, that thing looks mighty cool. And it's armed to the teeth too.
Ignore the article, its all a lie.
They're just trading tea and vodka.
Am I the only one here who didn't think immediately of threat but instead "cool, warships moving around the sea, wonder if there's good pictures"?
It's a joint effort to try and find Sean Connery in his Rogue Sub.
One Naval Destroyer vs a Carrier group?
Well Okay

Well I don't see any reason to scramble half of your navy just because of that.

It's more of a "hey guys, we have a military! Serious! Here, let me show off this toy!" thing.
Why is this news
"there was a boat anchored to keep out of the bad weather"
"we sent a boat out to talk to the boat"
"its all cool"
thanks for that...

Murder a fuckload of civilians under the pretext of "Saving the royal family"
British Destroyer vs Carrier group? If they hypothetically decided to battle it out, that destroyer would be torn to bits within minutes. Not sure if deterrence or fishing boat.
