It all started with a light-hearted April Fool's post by Google claiming it had figured out the key to capturing Street View imagery of the remote outback - with kangaroos. “Today, we’re happy to announce that Google has found an innovative way to capture a special collection of images from the back of beyond to include in Google Street View,” the Google site said. “Over the next four weeks, more than a thousand Big Red kangaroos will be equipped with a 360-degree head camera that will automatically capture images when the marsupial is on the move during daylight hours.” It said the cameras would be powered by solar panels in a jacket the kangaroo would wear, along with a GPS tracker. Images would be wired to Google in real-time, with 98 per cent of the Australian outback captured on Google Maps within three years. Software was developed to limit the “bouncing effect” experienced with the raw data. It also claimed leading marsupial specialists undertook extensive research to ensure the image capture activity wouldn’t interfere with the kangaroos’ grazing, sleeping or breeding. The prank fascinated people, with Twitter exploding with comments from the supportive to the outraged. Some even called for it to become a reality. PwrdByTofu: “Google mapping undeveloped areas, like the "The Outback" - with Kangaroos!!! Why? I don't know! PETA won't be happy.” James Bromley: Google Street Roo. I actually think this should happen! Along with Roomote Controls.” Melanie Rabier: “Ohhh come one make it real !! Google Street Roo - exploring the outback one bounce at a time.” Chris Barker: “Can't wait to see what the Roo's capture with their street view cams. #in Google Street Roo.” Read more: http://www.news.com.au/travel/australia/google-street-roo-gets-people-hopping-mad/story-e6frfq89-1226316435124#ixzz1qrPlhd39
I think it's a good idea :v:
fuck yes
Animal Rights Activists get pissed at everything joke or not. It's not hard to anger them.
"Google Street Roo". Clever, very clever :v:
That reminds me of this: Strapping cameras to animals. The next stage in reality TV's quest to amuse people who lack hobbies.
Wow, really? Animal rights activists care about harmless cameras strapped on Kangaroos? When I was little me and my family used to goo Roo' shooting on a farm nearby.
I know it's an April Fools joke but that's actually a pretty good idea. As long as the cameras are small and don't irritate the kangaroo I don't see the problem with it.
anyone remembers PigeonRank? :v: http://www.google.com/onceuponatime/technology/pigeonrank.html
I know it's an April Fools joke but that's actually a pretty good idea. As long as the cameras are small and don't irritate the kangaroo I don't see the problem with it.
The solar panel jacket probably would though.
Well, we put cameras and trackers on animals already, for research reasons, and few seem to have major issues, so if it's nonintrusive enough, it could actually be a viable method of mapping it, providing that the roos are fine with it.
Roo's are delicious.
Roo's are delicious.
That they are
"Google Street Roo". Clever, very clever :v:
I didn't get it at first, I just thought it was someone being incredibly racist to Chinese people
Can't wait for one of the cameras to pick up a black guy, his white friend, and a zany adventure about a red jacket. God, that movie sucked.
Fuck you I forgot all about that movie.
"Roomote control" - brilliant
