I have a Lenovo y500 laptop with dual Nvidia Geforce GT 650M cards in it. When playing games, notably CS:S and GTA IV, I've noticed that there is slight screen tearing while SLIed but fine when not. When Vsync is turned on during SLI, the screen tearing is abysmal. When running with a single GPU, the screen tearing goes away regardless of the vsync option.
The laptop's monitor is 15.6" at 1920x1080 with 59hz refresh. I have a 42" HDTV connected via HDMI running at 1920x1080 with 60hz. I assumed this might have had something to do with it, but when I unplugged the HDTV, the screen tearing persisted.
What's the framerate with one card and with both?
Using the CS:S stress test:
One card - 187.38fps
Both cards - 258.13fps
Well, in that case you're always above the refresh rate limit. Have you tried different drivers?
With one card, there is hardly any noticeable screen tearing. With both, there is a subtle screen tearing when turning which is still fairly noticeable.
Enabling Vsync, the framerate gets capped to 59.24 with one card and 58.97 with both, so within the range of the refresh rate. However, there is significant and extreme screen tearing with two cards while using Vsync.
I also just found out that the Nvidia site states that SLI is not supported on CS:S. Could this be the issue?
And, I haven't tried using different drivers. For now, I would rather not, but if it came to it, I'll try.
Edit:
I've tried forcing Vsync through the Nvidia Control Panel, with little success. I'll try playing around with some of the options and see where it gets me.
Are you running the most recent drivers?
Yea, I update my drivers through Nvidia Experience. Unless something is wrong with it, the driver should be the latest. 320.18.
I've been reading that many people are experiencing issues with SLI on the y500. Currently looking if anyone's found a solution, though.
I'm running a GTX 590 and the only issues I've had with the newest drivers is that it broke my ENB in Skyrim. I haven't tried running CS:S with my card, but I have run HL2 and it was fine. I've tried playing Gmod, but I had some weird artifacts on my screen.
By the way, are you running Windows 8?
Gmod is completely broken for me. There are words missing everywhere. But, I assume that's because the installation failed somewhere.
The other games I've noticed this problem is Gmod, CS:GO, and GTA IV. I'll have to check some other games to make sure it isn't a problem within source games.
And, I am running Windows 8.

But, here's the catch......... you'll get scroll lag in every game. Which sucks but it's better then the system crashing and it's better then getting flickers and tearing all over the place.
Nvidia, come up with a solution to this problem.
Turn on Win 7 compatibility.
We have a fix coming in our late March/early April driver. We'll be releasing an updated driver very soon but it won't contain this fix.
I'm not familiar with changing the compatibility mode of steam games, but I assume that it's the same as regular programs? Just change hl2.exe's compatibility to Windows 7?
If so, it didn't work. The screen tearing persists.
I did option two. But, no change.
I tested again with Payday: The Heist and Borderlands 2. I had to fiddle with the Vsync, but whether it was on or off did not really change much. There was either very slight screen tearing/micro-stuttering or no screen tearing/stuttering at all. It seems to only be a problem with source games for now. I may test with a wider range of games, but for now it's only occurring with steam games.
Edit:
It seems that only games not supporting SLI have this issue. Most source games do not support SLI according to http://www.geforce.com/games-applications/technology/sli.
Edit2:
I've actually found a solution from http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/718852-y500-sli-valve-source-game-engine-stuttering-fix.html that mostly fixes the problem. The solution is setting the launch options to -windowed -noborder +fps_max 60. However, maxing the fps at 60 causes stuttering, so I changed it to 100. So far, I'm not having issues, but this will only work for source games it seems. I'll have to attempt it with any other games that have this problem to see if it works.
