I'll drop another thread, deal with it.
Are people nervous to play something that would frighten the outside world or would you rather keep your experience to yourself and be selfish.
I personally couldn't give a shit if it embarrasses me in someone else's eyes. I'll play pretty much any style that is "easy" for them to digest, but when it comes to black metal and drone things... that's usually out of the question. Although I do enjoy blasting them out.
If it's noise music or really stark music, I'll tend to keep it to headphones but that rarely happens.
My dad usually comes into my room to make small talk if a football result is over or something is pissing him off depending on what music im playing affects the length of the conversation.
Anything that sounds bad when played in another room. I know from experience, Drone sounds a lot better when it's directed at you, not down the fucking stairs on the other side of the house leaking into your room.
I'll ONLY listen to Ethereal Wave through headphones by myself. I could hear it on a journey no problem too.

This darkness will be just for me. :>
Listen to it in an empty room with your* eyes closed...
AWESOME music!
See this guy knows it.

Because nobody else would enjoy it.
Death grips, OF, thats usually cause my parents would be kinda taken aback and my brother would take the piss.
I don't care if people don't like noise music, I listen to it without headphones anyways.
Lolicore however. Noone can ever know.
The only music I don't listen to in public is kitteh-nator's stuff. I don't care who hears me listening to awkward as fuck Pop Punk, no one can know I listen to loli swag (or his other songs).
probably Joanna Newsom, just because of how personal her music is.
This fucking song right here (specifically the solo):

at 3:38 Basically an amazing guitar solo with the audio of an old porn movie over it.
Imagine the awkwardness when my mom walked into my room and I was blasting this through my speakers.

Holy fucking shit that solo man
Unfortunately most of my friends don't have too similar music tastes to me, so I generally put on music that everyone (including myself) can enjoy.
However, the kind of electronic music that puts you into meditation/deep thought is something I'd generally keep to myself:

Post-rock, atmospheric black metal, most IDM, drone, and doom are the genres that I would listen to alone.
I mean, what fun is there in listening to GY!BE, Wolves in the Throne Room, Autechre, Sun O, or Electric Wizard in a big group?
dark ambient
thats about it, when i hang out with my friends everyone gets a turn of what they want to hear, and since everyone is just hanging out it's more of background stuff anyway
anything that isn't rock. I have a secret love for folk music and none of my friends can know

rofl, who cares what they think about your music taste?
Plenty of shit I've come across thanks to random links on this forum. It's not that I'm ashamed, more that since I blindly go into this stuff that I don't want coworkers getting introduced to stuff that will break their minds. People who know me don't bat an eye when they come in on me listening to more esoteric stuff.
Personally I force my music taste on everybody, so not really anything.
Well actually
maybe this
I love The Weepies I will not deny it.

Also, not counting stuff that just sounds awkward when played out loud. Just stuff I'd be embarrassed for people to know about I guess??
Everything else is just weird but I don't really care much if people know I like weird shit.
Like, every now and then I make CDs for my parents and stuff to send up, and I put stuff like World's End Girlfriend and Aphex Twin on it.

One I'm making just now has only two tracks on it so far, Uffie and Sleep Party People. Because really who cares, it's just going to be background music.

with the exception of The National Anthem, of course

after hearing that solo i am erect but i'm not sure if it's because of the porn audio or the guitar
pretty sure it's the guitar
Mostly anything with "post" in front of it. I'm listening to Devin Townsend a bit more now on my iPod, etc. and I listen to that at home. No real reason, other than that I can blare it through my speakers from my iPod instead of fucking my ears up with headphones in public.
I usually dont blast epic scores from original soundtracks to movies/shows from my truck, while parkin lot pimpin if you know what I mean.

No one I know likes them besides me, so they're headphones only.

i only really listen to it when i'm really high and just want to go on a mind adventure
BoC does a great job of creating awesome mindscapes when you're high as balls
i dont even know if mindscape is a word

I would figure The National Anthem would be the one to keep hidden away from people to avoid those "what the fuck are you listening to?" moments.
