• U.N. Climate Chief: Critics Should Rub Their Faces With Asbestos
The U.N.'s climate chief dismissed "nefarious" global warming skeptics this week by insinuating that they are deep in the pockets of big business -- and suggested that they go rub their faces in cancer-causing asbestos. Rajendra Pachauri, the besieged head of the U.N.'s International Panel on Climate Change, told the Financial Times on Wednesday that he is the victim of a "carefully orchestrated" campaign to block climate change legislation. "I would say [there are] nefarious designs behind people trying to attack me with lies, falsehoods," he told the paper, swatting away allegations that his India-based climate institute, TERI, has benefited from decisions made by the IPCC, which he also chairs. Climate change skeptics "are people who deny the link between smoking and cancer; they are people who say that asbestos is as good as talcum powder," he said. "I hope that they apply it (asbestos) to their faces every day." Pachauri's remarks came as pressure and scrutiny are mounting against the IPCC's hallmark Fourth Assessment Report, which laid out the case for man-made climate change over a thousand sprawling pages. The report contained misleading data about the melting rate of glaciers in the Himalayas and is riddled with citations to data furnished by activist groups, non-scientific journals and material that was never peer-reviewed. Pachauri called the furor over errors in the assessment report "a blip that is going to pass," and reiterated his intention to remain in place as the chief of the world's most powerful climate body. "I'm not a quitter. Some people would want me to be; some people would probably say that I should go, but I am not going to oblige them. I have no desire to leave at all," he said. His critics in the business world, he told the paper, "see climate change as a threat to their own comforts, their own convenience and the generation of easy profits." He accused them of establishing a network of lobbyists in D.C. "trying to write all kinds of malicious articles and indulge in invective." "It's all part of a pattern," he continued. "But let me clarify. I have no proof. I can only presume something like this is at work."
Source: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/02/05/climate-chief-critics-rub-faces-asbestos/
Do I detect scaremongery? Also, anyone who thinks smoking doesn't cause cancer is pretty dumb
Someone who thinks global warming is real said a dumb thing, ergo, global warming isn't real!
OH MY GOD! Asbestos attracts ManBearPig! What the fuck are they trying to do, kill us all???? Quick, buy this ManBearPig deterrent for only $999.95! You'll save the planet!
Global warming is real. It's also pretty much indisputable that increased amounts of c02 in the atmosphere are causing the effect. Some people seem to think it's part of a natural cycle though, and that it doesn't matter what we pump into the atmosphere at all. These are the same kinds of people who believe that Earth was created by the universe perfectly for humans to live on. You know, scientists believe the reason Venus is so hot is because it's atmosphere is 95% carbon dioxide. It's actually often called the 'sister' of Earth because it's so similiar in terms of dimensions. Same sort of size.
Why would the climate chief be so rude to them :/
Global warming is real.
It's not called global warming, it's called climate change. :science: Technically, even though the planet's average temperature is going up, certain places are getting strange weather patterns, like snow in tropical places etc.

Global warming makes sense. NO NO NO, YOU HAVE TO CALL IT 'CLIMATE CHANGE', OTHERWISE IT'S NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT. The most reliable way of measuring the climate trend is by measuring the average temperature of the sea, which has been consistently rising since the 60's.
NO NO NO, YOU HAVE TO CALL IT CLIMATE CONTROL, OTHERWISE IT'S NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT.
ok now you're grasping at straws with political correctness

The weather is getting more and more extreme, thus it's called climate change.
Venus is also right next to the sun...
but it's hotter than Mercury, which is even closer to the sun i thought that was common knowledge [editline]04:17PM[/editline]
The globe is getting warmer.
but it's hotter than Mercury, which is even closer to the sun i thought that was common knowledge
Thats what happens when your atmosphere is a closed sauna.
but it's hotter than Mercury, which is even closer to the sun i thought that was common knowledge [editline]04:17PM[/editline] yo I respect you for defending the science behind global warming, but calling it "climate change" has literally nothing to do with political correctness.
I get the feeling it sounds like people are trying to divert attention away from the fact that it's us causing it. When they call it climate change. Climate change makes it sound like a natural phenomen rather than a human caused one. That's what I meant by political correctness. Also, go rub your face in asbestos/climate change.
Thats what happens when your atmosphere is a closed sauna.
I don't see what point you're trying to make. That's what I was saying, Venus is hotter because of the huge amounts of co2 in it's atmosphere.
Climate change is just more of a technical name. Every soccer mom and their dog knows it as global warming, where as the media and such most likely call it climate change, due to the fact it's more scientifically correct.

Political correctness is changing the things you say so as not to favor certain demographics over other ones. It has nothing to do with environmental science. "Climate Change" isn't used by people who think it's not man-made. It's a more truthful term since what is happening is a lot more complex than just the earth getting warmer.
hasn't it been rising since, I dunno, the ice age?
Not consistently.
I don't see what point you're trying to make. That's what I was saying, Venus is hotter because of the huge amounts of co2 in it's atmosphere.
Wasn't negatively directed at you, just stating.
He was agreeing with you by making a metaphor.
yo I respect you for defending the science behind global warming, but calling it "climate change" has literally nothing to do with political correctness.
Especially because it actually makes the climate colder by melting the ice caps and releasing near-freezing water into the oceans causing the temperature to decline near the ocean. They thought that this would happen after a period of warming but the statistics suggest that it is in fact happening now.
I wish it was global cooling instead. I don't like the warm.
So if it wasn't for us, the climate wouldn't change at all? Never? ...We seriously can't be the main driver. We're not all-powerful but we are an egotistical species that thinks we are affect everything directly.
I think I will save this clever insult for future use.
Distance from Sun: 0.72 AU Atmosphere: 9.3 megapascals 96.5% Carbon Dioxide 3.5% Nitrogen Temperature: 465 degrees celsius. Distance from Sun: 0.4 AU Atmosphere: negligible Temperature: -173 degrees celsius to 420 degrees celsius I rest my case.
The real question is: Are we really affecting global warming that much? Or is it just the usual cycle of the planet? Remember that earth had cycles of warm periods followed by ice ages way before we even walked.
Remember: Global warming is real in the summer. A joke in the winter.
Remember: Global warming is real in the summer. A joke in the winter.
Not really, around here this winter were temperatures of around -25 to -36 degrees. I froze my ass off tbh
