Why do you need the WWW in front of facepunch for it to work? - General

I went without facepunch for about an entire day yesterday. I was like "Why the fuck is facepunch down but not garrysmod.org/com/garry.tv?" I kept clicking the little icon thats in my chrome browser, and I decided to view a cache copy and go to videos. Videos section loaded up and then I realized, I need the stupid WWW. in front of Facepunch.com Why? I don't think it used to be like this. It's a domain thing.

Probably the DNS is still propagating after some sort of server change, it'll be back to normal soon.
