MOSCOW, April 30 (RIA Novosti) – China strongly opposes unilateral sanctions against Russia, Beijing's ambassador to Moscow told reporters Wednesday, adding that US and EU sanctions would not resolve the crisis in Ukraine.
“We are against imposing unilateral sanctions on Russia. They are not a way out,” Chinese Ambassador Li Hui said.
The remarks followed Washington’s announcement on Monday that it had added seven high-ranking Russian officials and 17 Russian companies to a blacklist of sanctioned persons.
On Tuesday, the European Union agreed to fall in line with Washington and added another 15 Russian and Ukrainian individuals to its sanctions list. Among those targeted are Russia’s military chief of staff, Gen. Valery Gerasimov, and intelligence chief Igor Sergun, as well as six pro-federalization activists from Ukraine’s southeastern regions.
Li’s comments echoed a statement by Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang earlier this week that “imposing sanctions is not helpful in terms of solving the problem. It will only exacerbate tensions.”
The Chinese minister called on all parties to continue dialog and promote a political solution. “Imposing sanctions goes against the interests of all parties," he said.
At the same time, Li lauded the continued growth of Russian-Chinese bilateral cooperation, adding there was a marked rise in trade turnover in recent years.
they did this with Iran, once the west embargoed Iran's oil they suddenly had a massive spike in imported oil
still I like how besides actually acknowledging Russia's fault here they say reaction from the west can only make this wors
Sanctioning Russia is bad for China, since China is trying to encroach itself into the Russians markets in the middle east.
It's also not a good idea to badmouth the big guy sitting next to you. Who knows, unlike the EU, stale words and empty threats might not be the only things they have.

You're right, Russia should probably be careful what they say about China.
Regardless of what his motives are, he's right.
Sanctions against Russia will not achieve jack shit and will only destabilize global economy while further entrenching and nationalizing the Russian populace.
Sorry Americans but from a European view I think you only made the situation much worse then it first was.
And this comes from a peaceful country called The Netherlands.
I am waiting to see how Australia responds to this, considering our allegiance lies with the crown, and that is supportive of both the EU, and NATO.
Considering how China is now our largest export, and holds the largest number of Australian sovereign assets, I shall await in futility the half-assed bullshit political response of "no comment".
Pretty sure China already did this in the first wave of sanctions.
China's words are about as effective as the words of the stereotypical U.N angry letter. Except the UN can back up their angry letters with a show of force that wouldn't be complete economic and political suicide if need be.

So we should've just sat back and watch a large country annex whatever it likes without repercussions? Sanctions are pretty much the only non-militaristic measure we can use to put pressure on Russia.

Peaceful? Weren't you in the coalition of the willing?

Even though our allegiance is with Ye Olde Empire*, we have many treaties / agreements signed and obliged to with China which allows us to be one of the few very wealthy countries through large amounts of primary industry exports and/or supposed vast amounts of foreign investment (even ownership of patches of land which eclipse countries like Luxembourg or Belgium when referring to land size)
Do note also, our 'beloved'* Prime Minister Abbott spent a few weeks traveling around NE Asia to formulate Free Trade Agreements to somewhat encourage more vast amounts of foreign imports and investment.
* : note sarcasm pls
On topic though, I honestly don't know what the Government coalition will do to alleviate the problems caused by this

**Do note that the largest coal exporting port in the world, Port of Newcastle, in my nearest city, has leased the port, in a large part to China for 98years.
(The city of Newcastle receives but a fraction of what it was leased for).
I am willing to sit back and watch this out, and be disturbed, but truly unsurprised by what I see.

Didn't know Ukraine was part of the USA.
If someone I don't know starts a fight with another dude then I wouldn't intervene.

Isolationism has no place in a world of globalization.

"I didn't raise a hand when they came for my neighbor, and when they came for me, no one raised a hand to save me." Or however that old thing goes.
The point being, you're dumb.

Since China is building ghost cities to show economic growth couldn't they instead direct all that towards military spending and building tanks, aircraft etc? They wouldn't need to close any of the steel plants they need since they could use them for the military and could perhaps export some of these goods for extra revenue. I don't really know about economics so sorry if this is dumb but it seems like a better solution to me

How many times do isolationism and appeasement have to fail before people realize they don't work? Especially in the modern era.
