Microsoft sits in the corner being an entertainment console maker while sony and nintendo continue to focus on video games
Microsoft, you know we have computers right? We can go watch streams without the consoles. THEY ARE FOR GAMES!
The concept of a console being solely for games is sheer ignorance. I would rather watch a show on my 42" TV than my 19" computer screen any day of the week. Are there some things I watch on my computer? Yeah, but I would rather watch Breaking Bad on Netflix on my 360 in my room laying down as opposed to sitting at a computer and doing it.
And you can always connect the computer to your big ass TV.
We must dominate ALL the entertainment systems!

But at that point, why don't I just watch TV?
Thank god I can finally watch the Vampire Diaries on my 360.

Because I don't have the money to put a box to watch TV on in every room of my house, nor do I get the channels that provide some of the entertainment I watch on Netflix. Not that hard to figure out.

I'd wager an extra box would cost less than an Xbox + Gold membership with Netflix on top of that

An Xbox I bought 2-3 years ago for $250, a gold membership that I pay once a year at $60 (less than my Satellite) and Netflix that I pay $15 a month for. If I wanted the channels that provide the entertainment I wanted on my Satellite, on top of buying another box plus maintenance to get it put in my room, it's easier to just have the single Xbox.
It's like asking why Facebook, Tumblr, internet browsers, Netflix, Cameras, YouTube and all that are on my phone when I could just use my computer. It's convenient.
