Most people seem to really like the indie PC sensation The Stanley Parable, but not everyone enjoys one of the jokes in the game. Specifically, a jokey 50s-style PSA video that shows a black child being given cigarettes and set on fire by a white guy.
In response to a couple player complaints, The Stanley Parable creator Davey Wreden says he's going to remove the offending images in an upcoming patch. You can watch the scene in question at 2:49 in this Let's Play video, though mind that it does show one of the game's many (many) endings.
P
"Choice," the PSA video's narrator says in the game, "it's the best part of being a real person… For example, in this scenario, a hypothetical real person named Steven has a choice. He could spend years helping improve the quality of life for citizens of impoverished third-world nations... [Cue image of him lighting a cigarette for a young black kid] ...or he could systematically set fire to every orphan living within a thirty kilometer radius of his house. [Second image of him setting the kid on fire]"
How is this racially charged? It could easily be any other kid of any other race
I don't give a crap, it's funny.
Well it's nice that they're changing it, even if it's supposedly only a few players who find it distasteful.
It's not like it'll ruin the joke.

Is that really a good excuse for anything?
>a COUPLE player complaints
If you change something every time a few people complain, you won't have any game left.

Some people hate the idea that you can smile.

WEE WOO WEE WOO WEE WOO HERE COME THE FUN POLICE.
brb going to find which of the fucking eleven billion endings this might have possibly been in
Considering the source, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the "revised" version just makes Steven black.
Or swaps out the single black orphan for a group of orphans with properly varied heritages and backgrounds (to be set on fire by Steven).
When i found this in the game, I thought it was hilarious and kind of fit with what the topic was parodying

[sp]Phone Ending in which you unplug the phone[/sp]
yay censorship in the name of political correctness
remember when tumblr slacktivism and over-sensitivity was something openly ridiculed by the media
yeah me neither
"Steven has a choice. He could spend years helping improve the quality of life for citizens of impoverished third-world nations..."
How are you going to portray a kid of a third world country instead? A well dressed white kid being set on fire?

ha ha i found it without your help
it was still there
They were making fun of 50s racism how fucking dumb do you have to be not to get that
oh well at least i got to experience the joke before the anti-fun police arrived
I seem to have a nose for bullshit people will somehow get offended by. When I first saw that scene I thought "I bet someone somewhere will get upset over that just because the kid is black." I didn't actually think it would lead to censoring it, though.
WHY IS HE REMOVING IT?!?!
Im sorry, this game.. well every game is ART in my eyes...
He needs to grow a back bone, keep it in, and hold on to his integrity as a creator. He made it and any sensible person can understand the humor behind it. This whole racist thing is going way to far?
Like am i in the wrong for being pissed that hes giving in like this and pissed at people for being so thick? This is appalling. A travesty for any ART in general.
Basically, this is bullshit.
I'm going to set it as my wallpaper now
At the same time I could argue that i'm offended because the white man is being protrayed as a stereotypical asshole, which makes absolutely no fucking sense.
Shit people are so fucking insecure about themselves.
In fact, they should make an entirely new ending based around this incident.
oh fuck not another goddamn ending
oh fuck not another goddamn ending
I hope in a month they add 15 new endings
I hope in a month they add 15 new endings
Including this one but switch the roles.
Including this one but switch the roles.
the narrator will be replaced by a black man
the narrator will be replaced by a black man
Double twist: The narrator was always a black man, you racist.
would laugh so hard if they put Steven in blackface just to spite people
Where is thisispain, he will be able to tell us if this is truly racism.

So I looked up the guys twitter. Cakebread is "fixing" it by having the joke being less subtle and cutting out the kid being on fire

Sick burn
he'll probably just change it to a burning house or something...its not like it's hard to change the video, all he says is "he could set fire to all orphans in x radius"
Is that really a good excuse for anything?
Are someone's hurt feelings a good excuse for censoring art?
