DVD and games rental chain Blockbuster is to go into administration for a second time, says its owner, private equity firm Gordon Brothers Europe.
Blockbuster collapsed for the first time in January, after losing business to online firms streaming films over the internet as well as offering rentals through the post.
It was sold to Gordon Brothers Europe in March.
Before its troubles began, the firm had 528 stores.
Jut can't get with the times.
They always have great deals though. Got to rent 3 blu-rays for £4, and their game prices were always competitive.
If they had a lovefilm style postal renting system or online streaming I would use them, I just don't like having to go into the store to pick up and drop off the films.
Awesome that they're still around there
I never liked Blockbuster when they were still in business here. They were too expensive and they were always short on movies I wanted to get.
There was another video rental chain here called "The Movie Gallery", which was locally and family owned that was much better. Ironically we were one of their first customers when they opened up in like 1989 up until they went defunct some time around 2005 I think.
I get the feeling they only bought it so they could strip it out. I never thought they had any intention of turning it around.
Edit: You know I'm not too sure how I feel about the staff in this case, I think administration was a warning shot and the general High Street condition of Games, films and music stores should of made them jump ship.
You say that but their marketplace is fantastic. The last of us for 25, grid 2 the week of release for 15 etc. I solely buy ps3 games there.
i just saw one of these things a while ago, which was weird because i thought they all had gone out of business, but maybe it was just one guy running a movie store and never took down the signs

too bad they tried to start up a video streaming service with enron, not some other guy, maybe we'd be watching blockbuster streaming instead of netflix

They do have a postal rental service for games/film - no streaming with it though.
I used the free trial a while ago and it seemed alright.
I worked at Blockbuster literally a week ago before I was told my workplace would be shutting down. :v:
Damn shame. I enjoyed working there, too. Had a lot of good friends.
these guys should just merge into a library or something...

So they can have two businesses that have little use in modern society instead of one?

you must be crazy, libraries are still very important.
Did you know, people read books they don't want to buy?
They have good prices and good service, but they've just failed to move with the times.
If libraries were cooler, there would be a nice business oppurtunity here..
Why don't amazon invest in a members-only library chain? That would work no?
I'm surprised Blockbuster is still holding out in the UK.
The Blockbuster where I live is getting turned in to a William Hill. Because a town of 12,000 desperately needs 4 bookies.
Blockbusters is going to die.
I remember renting about a dozen videogames and returning to find the store closed. Still have those games.

I used to live in Maine, never saw a Blockbuster.
We did have a Movie Gallery though. That had great pricing, great selection, they often sold movies and games at decent prices. That one closed in 09-10 i think. When it closed, they sold everything including the shelving. We ended up buying two sections of the giant outter wall shelving, and put it in our house :v
Now I live in NC. Ive seen one Blockbuster store, and i once saw a Blockbuster rental kiosk. I checked the kiosk prices out of curiosity, theyre twice the price of RedBox.
Ive been using RedBox ever since Movie Gallery closed. Its pretty great, DVD's are $1.20usd per night, Blueray is $1.60. Used to be $0.20 less, but was upped at one point
I loved Blockbuster. Renting console games for $7 to beat the singleplayer was the best.
Yeah it's probably going to die, we still have one around here that gets a lot of customers though.
Does this mean I don't have to pay my late fines?
isn't demand practically dead for blockbuster nowadays

Jump ship to where? It's not as simple as just leaving a job and walking into another. It's a shame block buster hasn't been able to evolve with the times and just becomes yet another retail chain closing on our decaying high streets.
Adapt to the new environment or die in it. That's just the way the universe works.

Blockbuster sends you pre-owned games even if you order a new one from their site. I ordered something from them that said it would be new, and when it arrived it was pre-owned and not in good condition. It had no online pass which was the whole reason i wanted it new. On the phone they said something like the disc was new but the case wasn't, and that all i could do is send it back for a refund and order it again, despite them saying they couldn't guarantee i'd get a new copy next time and the same thing wouldn't happen again.
they need to foray in to the realm of digital video
Sadly no matter what they do,it's too late their screwed.
