Friend needs a laptop for college, $600-$800 range.

One of my friends needs to get a laptop before he goes to college, and he asked me for advice. So I'm gonna ask Facepunch. Capability isn't really a factor (not gonna be gaming, but powerful enough to run normal programs well) but I'd like to recommend something that won't fall apart in a year. His price range is between $600 and $800, but can be higher within reason (I'm guessing around $100-$150.) I've never owned a laptop and can't offer my own opinion, so I hope the H&S people can find something that'd fit the bill for him.

I've been looking for laptops so I may be able to help. I finally decided to settle on an Asus N53 which is a bit out of the 600-800 price range, but [url=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220951]this[/url] may work for what your friend needs. Of course, the graphics card probably won't be needed and you could find a computer with a better processor for that amount. If capability isn't a factor, then he could probably aim lower than even $600 though.

From your thread I gathered that Lenovos don't have the best battery life. I looked at some Asus laptops, but the battery life wasn't listed.

Try taking a look at the ASUS U41/U35. I have the latter, and the 13" screen size is perfect for portability and usable screen space. Just typing up notes or other basic functions, it lasts around 10hrs. U41 is the same except with a 14" screen and a slightly better gpu IIRC, which may translate to a slightly worst battery life.

Oh, and there's no optical drive in the U35 which helps with weight n size. The U41 does have one, however.
