it seems an AMD beta driver for Windows 8.1 has some clues on what it might become the norm with 8.2:
Support for new Windows 8.1 features, including:
- Wireless Display – Microsoft’s support for Wireless Display Technology
- 48 Hz Dynamic Refresh rates for Video Playback
- Aggressive V-sync interrupt optimization
- Skype/Lync video conferencing acceleration
- New DX11.1 feature – Tiled Resources
so far no game has used 11.1 to begin with, but BF4 will be the first game to use DX11.1, so probably a few years from now 11.2 will have support.
Dont you dare not release it for Win7 too.
Dont you dare not release it for Win7 too.
they will not release it for windows 7
It will probably end up on 7 somehow
I still hope that one day developers will get annoyed at the OS limitation with DirectX and start moving towards OpenGL.
many developers are switching, or at least making their engines have opengl compliant graphics engines.
unity, unreal, source, and many other AAA engines now have opengl renderers.
so it's not like windows vista/7 users are completely screwed.

Planetary Annihilation (Windows, OSX, Linux) is OpenGL only, even on Windows. It also has a 64 bit version.

Holy fucking shit.
I knew microsoft were heading the right direction in terms of perceived motion smoothness in Windows 8 (lots of games are visually smoother despite same fps and it's easier to get a statistically perfect madvr+potplayer+etc setup going on shit hardware), but this 100% proves it. Can't fucking wait for these improvements
Too bad Windows 8.1 still does not give me, a desktop user the experience I prefer. The start menu they added sucks in my opinion in comparison to the windows 7 start menu.
It's moments like these I'm glad I went with Windows 8.
And it's moments like these I feel bad for those unfortunate.

That's because they didn't add a start menu in 8.1, they added a start button. You'd known this if you'd read.

If you right click on it it brings up a menu with things like My Computer and stuff like that. I prefer windows 7, and I don't know why the button is seen as a major improvement to Windows 8.

Windows 8 already does this if you right click there

Windows 8 + a free download = flat upgrade to windows 7 desktop experience (as far as I can tell).
Not necessarily saying it's worth the money to upgrade, but I honestly don't see any advantages to 7 after having used 8 for a while.

That's been there since the first revision of Windows 8, though. And what button? If you're talking about the start button they added in 8.1 they did it to appeal to the people who couldn't handle moving their cursor to the bottom left corner. Nobody said it was a "major improvement".
the start button is a waste of space, it has 0 advantage over what windows 8 has now

Exactly. I've even seen media hype it up as the savoir for Windows 8. Microsoft isn't planning on a speedy DX11.2 adoption rate if they're going to only release it for Windows 8.
The video isn't working for me. :(

My guess is that they'll essentially be downporting a lot of features back down to windows 7 and vista. While keeping some stuff exclusive - like the baked in support for wireless streaming and other little tidbits.

In my opinion, the start menu sucks because it makes your eyes fixate on 1/10th of your screen while Metro makes it full screen and you can do everything you could do back with the start menu and it's faster/easier/better looking to use.

it tough to say if it's even possible. it's not like you can just replace DLLs and call it a day... most of the time the kernel is actually modified to support some of the lower level features.

that's funny because no one has yelled at Apple for not bringing OpenGL 4 to the older versions of OSX. in fact, none of the current released versions even support OpenGL 4!

I just get seriously confused by it. For once i understand how it feels to be 60 and be handed a computer. I've never had that in my life ever, but Metro did that to me. 5 clicks later and no bitching and classic shell saved my clueless ass. No problems were had from that day forth.

I really wish games would start shipping with a menu option to toggle between DX and OpenGL. Why do they offer a toggle between DX levels, but not OpenGL and WHY not when the engine supports it? I will never understand the logic.
I hope I can disable the start button in windows 8.1

I definitely understand why people wouldn't like Metro during Windows 8 but 8.1 fixes almost every problem people initially had with it.

Probably because they are making directx/opengl calls directly or otherwise hacking/modifying the engine and can't be bothered to port their shit to the opposite api

Time and money. You may have to change how things are done to handle OpenGL properly.

because openGL's versions are insanely different from each other.

99% sure they confirmed you can, could be wrong, but when I first read about 8.1 I remember that being a thing.
I guess I'll upgrade to 8.1, why not
