Florian Mueller has been killing it these past few months with his analysis of various tech patent suits on his FOSSpatents blog, and today he's unearthed a pretty major bombshell: at least 43 Android source files that appear to have been directly copied from Java. That's a big deal, seeing as Oracle is currently suing Google for patent and copyright infringement in Android -- which isn't a hard case to prove when you've got 37 Android source files marked "PROPRIETARY / CONFIDENTIAL" and "DO NOT DISTRIBUTE" by Oracle / Sun and at least six more files in Froyo and Gingerbread that appear to have been decompiled from Java 2 Standard Edition and redistributed under the Apache open source license without permission. In simple terms? Google copied Oracle's Java code, pasted in a new license, and shipped it.
Now, we've long thought Google's odd response to Oracle's lawsuit seemingly acknowledged some infringement, so we doubt this is a surprise in Mountain View, but we're guessing handset vendors aren't going to be so thrilled -- especially since using Android has already caused companies like HTC and Motorola to be hit with major patent lawsuits of their own. We'll see what happens, but in the meantime you should definitely hit up Florian's site for the full dirt -- it's some 47 pages worth of material, and it's dense, but if you're into this sort of thing it's incredibly interesting.
Couldnt you circle the changed bits? I cant find it.

I fail. Rate me boxes.
Shit's about to go down on the disco floor
Couldnt you circle the changed bits? I cant find it.
there is none
Well gee.. maybe because Android uses Java. Big surprise.
Who cares.
Who cares.
Oracle does apparently.
amateurs should have changed the class names
isn't this old news that's been going back and forth for the last year and a half?
If this was still Sun, they might of stood a chance but this is Oracle.
Android is going to become their bitch after this.
Couldnt you circle the changed bits? I cant find it.
in the pieces of code pictured there are no differences. hence the accusation and article.
I'm not sure why it's weird that Android, which uses Java for its applications, uses Java code.
That's a pretty low way for Oracle to get money for their company. Doesn't matter, I'm sure Google could pay for it with pocket change.

totally, Sun was all about open this open that. Oracle is still open, so long as someone other than them doesn't do anything with it, in other words hardly open.
Android won't be their bitch, however, I'm positive Google has more money and more lawyers than Oracle - hell, they own all of the immediate electricity and telecommunications stuff.
I'm not sure why it's weird that Android, which uses Java for its applications, uses Java code.
and this is why, as with previous lawsuit attempts, any and all of Oracle's attempts to sue Google are going to trip on their balls and fall face first
Well what the hell do you want them to do, Oracle? Reprogram the function, so it does the same exact thing it did before with different names? This is horribly stupid, honestly.
And of course Android is using Java, you know, in the Dalvik Java Virtual Machine it runs.
That's a pretty low way for Oracle to get money for their company. Doesn't matter, I'm sure Google could pay for it with pocket change.
mm no this is how Oracle's made money for the last 4 years so this isn't really a shocker or anything
Unless Java files suit I don't see how it affects anyone.

wah wah wah
Well gee.. maybe because Android uses Java. Big surprise.
But they're not allowed to directly rip code and then release it under a different license; and Java being open-source doesn't mean it's public domain.
Brilliant journalism in that article - "... you should definitely hit up Florian's site for the full dirt - ..." with no link anywhere.
Yes I'd rather spend more time complaining about this than using Google to find the site myself.
Androids JVM is based off of Apache Harmony. So it's not like Google did this themselves.
Seriously So what androids java. what gives.
And this code is probably from the official Sun/Oracle OpenJDK.
The majority of OpenJDK code is released under the GNU General Public License Version 2 (GPLv2).

I don't think you realise how big Oracle are.
I don't think you realise how big Oracle are.
Apparently, Oracle is 3 times larger than Google.
Who had known?
Oracle suprises me.
Who cares.
You obviously know little about Oracle.
Just in case people are seeing this thread and not seeing the one down towards the bottom of the page.

Why is this such a big deal?
