Famous Wii-hacker finds his way into Wii-u, finds full specifications
Hector Martin, perhaps better known as Marcan on the Wii homebrew scene, and the like, has found his way in the Wii U.
In a series of tweets, we now know more about the specifications of Nintendo's new console.
Here we find out that the speed (clock speed) of CPU is 1.24 GHz, it has three cores (Power PC 750-like) and the GPU is 545MHz.
This is, in a slightly simpler language, not very good numbers even if they themselves do not tell the whole truth about what the Wii U is capable of. The speed of the CPU is much slower than in, for instance, PS3 and Xbox 360.
Wow, what a piece of shit.
1GHz of one core is not the same as 1GHz of another. Even less so with GPUs. As you go up Nvidia's 500 series, the clock speeds actually go down.
Of course we've already heard that 4A games don't like the CPU, but the GPU could be good.
because clockspeed is everything right guys

why???
because clockspeed is everything right guys
I think the most important thing with a clock is the sound, because you'll be hearing it so much.
Besides how do you tell time properly if your clock runs too fast anyway?

I do not understand computer jargon.
because clockspeed is everything right guys
It's not, but you'd think it'd be a little bit higher.
Variable clock speed, most probably. They're just throttled down to save power and reduce noise from cooling.
Though I'm not too literate when it comes to IBM's stuff.
I've looked into it a bit, and while the guy said that this is what was expected from a POWER7 design derivative, POWER7 can push much higher than that. Of course they'd probably lower the clock speed to save power compared to the server-grade components, but this seems a bit conservative.
No wonder there have been so many reports of WiiU ports being shit, the developers didn't take the slow ass CPU into account. I'm sure the CPU isn't as bad as raw numbers makes it look but it's still shockingly slow, I was expecting it to be 2.4Ghz or slightly lower.
In comparison, the wii had a single core 729 MHz CPU and a 243 MHz GPU.
While the wii u might be pretty low-spec, it's leagues better than the original wii.
RAM: 88MB -> 1024MB (usable for games)
CPU: 729 MHz -> 1269MHz x 3
GPU: 243 MHz -> 545MHz

Yes but the Wii was leagues behind everything else even at release.
Once again, Nintendo attempts to impress all, but fails to meet even the most essential expectations. They receive none of my money, but have my pity.
1GHz of one core is not the same as 1GHz of another.
Frequency doesn't change between cores, the clock frequency you input is the same
I think what you mean is that putting 1GHz into one CPU will not have the same effect as 1GHz on another, which you are correct in thinking
What people tend to do is see the clock speed and think "oh this one is twice as fast because that one is 1GHz and this one is 2GHz", which isn't always true. It depends on the number of clock cycles to perform tasks (such as adding two numbers) for that CPU. Perhaps the CPU in the Wii U is really efficient? It can therefore run at a lower clock speed and produce a good performance for much less wattage
If anything, I bet it runs cool with a clockspeed like that.
And nobody knows what changes have been made to the chip architecturally, so don't judge its performance off clock speed alone.
This pretty much

You're pity? The bloody thing is sold out everywhere, I don't think they need your pity.

you're not buying a wii-u simply because the clock speed is too low?
I dont care, I bought it for the Nintendo games anyway. I'm excited for Pikmin 3 and the inevitable 3d platforming Mario and the Zelda
I hope they overhauled the architecture of the chip so it's efficient as fuck.
The PPC750 is bloody ancient. I've actually got a ppc750 chip from a beige powermac from the mid 90's
I would think the gimmicky controller and the scratch & fingerprint magnet plastic would put more people off.
And the shit games.
These specs sure do look "low-endish". I doubt there will be any graphical highlights, yet I never expected games for the Nintendo Consoles to be so.
Of course it sold out everywhere, it's fucking Nintendo, you could slap a picture of Mario on a box of dog turds and it would sell like mad.
P.S. I'm not saying the Wii U or Nintendo is bad, I'm saying that Nintendo consoles and games will sell very well regardless.
Didn't claim anything else man :v:
oh boy another case of the megahertz myth
You're pity? The bloody thing is sold out everywhere, I don't think they need your pity.
I've heard (and been to) many places that have tons of WiiUs just laying around in store because no one is buying them. Whether or not it's sold out depends on where you live it seems.
Inovation right guys?
I'm more interested in hacking the Wii-U controller.
Could be used for some neat shit, but it's being held back by the Wii-U itself.
We crap on Nintendo selling us stuff with what on paper would look like shit specs but they sure do know how to turn it into having some of the best games I've ever played.
you're not buying a wii-u simply because the clock speed is too low?
Why would someone buy a Wii U when they can wait a few months for next-gen consoles. Obviously the CPU is a piece of shit, 2 major developers have voiced their outrage already and it suffers frame rate issues in games that 360's can handle fine.
Wow, how the hell do you even make a CPU that slow in this day and age, even fucking Pentium 4's are faster than that.
Power PC.
Speed isn't everything, I thought we got over this shit like 5 years ago.
WHAT THE HELL IS A CLOCK SPEED? I DON'T SPEAK GEEK.

Assassin's Creed 3 looks better on the Wii U than the 360 because it's a proper port
I feel like this really doesn't matter. I also own a 360 and a killer PC, so I would want a Wii U for the games you KNOW will be good, that never fail you. Mario, Zelda, the Mario Karts, Mario Party, ect. They have always been great fun, especially with other people. Or if you have friends who are more casual gamers, you can share stuff like this with them. I'm not going to sit around with my family and play CoD.
So graphics in this case, really don't matter much. If they find fun ways to use the wii U (im sure mario party will) it'll be great.
Also, Rayman Origins was the best 2D platformer ever made (imo) can't wait for the new one.
