The PlayStation 3 will remain under Sony's support until at least 2015, said VP of hardware marketing John Koller. The company has no plans to reduce the pricing of the older models in light of the new, slimmer PS3.
"We're going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years," said Koller in an interview with GameSpot. "Absolutely."
"And we're going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that's running hot. And I can tell you right now, the development spigot for PS3 is very hot. A lot of great games coming," said Koller.
In an interview with Engadget, Koller addressed the different price points for the PS3. Although the latest slims are Sony's new standard, Koller said that neither the $250 160GB model or the $300 320GB will come with a cheaper price tag.
"There's no price drop formally, but the thing that's been happening in the market over the last year or so is that there's been so many retail price promotions, and so many different gift card offers and all those things, being done by all of us (Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony), that we've heard from our consumer, ‘Enough with all these weird price moves. What we really want is content and games and value,'" said Koller.
The $269.99 250GB model, bundled with the "Game of the Year" edition of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and $30 worth of content for Dust 514, will be available on September 25th. The $299.99 500GB model will follow on October 30th as an Assassin's Creed 3 bundle.
Pfffft
I think Sony's decision is somewhat questionable, especially with Wii U pre-orders selling out practically everywhere. I think Sony (and Microsoft) will need to act sooner before they lose a good portion of their customers to Nintendo. Time lost is money and customers lost, and will hurt both Sony and Microsoft the longer they wait.
Fuck
Well I guess that's just going to make PC gaming even more affordable since games aren't going to advance anywhere while the hardware is relentlessly moving ahead.
The side effect is that games are going to continue to not take advantage of anything past dx 9.
Oh God imagine the money Microsoft would make if they release a new console next year.
Fucking bullshit price drop. $30 less? $270 for that? Even Microsoft knows better than that.

Most people who bought the Wii stopped playing with them about a year later. Perhaps Sony and Microsoft are hoping that happens again and are waiting for that period to release their console.
If you're looking for a good price on a PS3, look on amazon.com. Used 250gb consoles going for under $200.

That would be the best case scenario from Sony's and Microsoft's eyes. However, I'm not entirely sure that'll be the case this time around with Wii Us already selling out this early.

The Wii was impossible to find for months. I'm just wondering whether the thing that contributed to the Wii's decline was competition from Sony and Microsoft. Without that (assuming they're waiting it out this time) will the Wii-U/would the Wii have stopped being used?
I remember a time when pcfags and consolefags didn't exist.
Ah yes....the days when you would spend an hour on the PC playing Duke Nukem before a friend came over, then palying Mortal Kombat on the SNES for another two.
It's reminiscent of AMD's Radeon 7xxx series and NVIDIA's 6xx series. AMD got the upper hand for quite a bit because they were first to the next generation of video cards, but NVIDIA caught up and struck back, packing quite the punch.
If we were to apply the exact same scenario with consoles, Nintendo would be AMD, and Sony would be NVIDIA.

Sooo... who wins?

The Wii declined, but Nintendo got a ton more sales than the others anyway.
the word 'spigot' makes me laugh for some reason
so does fondleslab but that's because it sounds like a depraved sex toy

We can't fully determine who will win just yet as we only have the Wii U vs. the PS3, a last-gen console. All we can do is wait and see if Sony and Microsoft come out with something that can match or even beat the Wii U.
Looks like Sony doesn't wants our money.

Sony is just shooting themself in the foot with this decision.

Of course. I doubt Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo cares whether people keep using their product as long as they bought it. Although I guess first party games contribute to their earnings so they must have some interest.
um you guys realize that Sony supported the PS2 after the PS3 was released, right?
Sony always supports their consoles even after a new one is released, this isn't a surprise.

Yes, however, the fact that they won't be cutting the prices of the older models is concerning. While that could be attributed to greed, I'm fearing that Sony isn't quite at the point where they can release a new console that can match or even beat the Wii U, and I'm assessing what damage that might cause to them and if it'll turn out to be the AMD 7xxx series and the NVIDIA 6xx series scenario all over again, but with consoles.
I would love to be wrong on the "not quite ready" part though.

You'd be hard pressed to call the Wii-U next gen (I'm not saying that's good or bad) so why couldn't Sony release something more powerful?

It's the closest thing we have to the next generation right now. I'm sure Sony would be able to match or beat the Wii U, but timing is all too important.

Yeah, no. While Sony might be on the deep end since they won't have a new console until 2015, Microsoft I imagine is going to be making a pretty penny with the 720 when it comes out. You're acting like if people have a Wii U they're not going to buy anything else.

What do you mean by "beat the Wii U"? Sales or power?
What do you mean by "beat the Wii U"? Sales or power?
Power, and if the timing is good, maybe even sales.

The next playstation will certainly be more powerful than the Wii U, but who knows about sales. Lots of factors to consider, timing as you say is just one. It's going to be interesting.
