Game director Junichi Masuda explained that for technical and stylistic reasons, the 3D effect would only be used during certain points in the game. "One of these is that we really wanted to focus on the theme of beauty in Pokemon X and Y," he told Digital Spy. "We really wanted to make the overworld - the field - as beautiful as possible. "We could put in a lot of grass and flowers, and try to make them as pretty as possible. When you don't use the 3D effect you are able to render quite a bit more on the 3DS. "That's one of the reasons why we wanted to leave it off in the overworld, because it gives us more power to show off more beautiful graphics." 3D would then also be "more effective, more impactful" when it was used in the game, such as during battles.
fine with me, the 3D makes my eyes feel tired anyway
So long as the world is still 3D rendered with the 3D environments, fair 'nuff.
I still wish they would have used a higher res screen instead of a low res 3D screen. 400x240 is just too low for 3D games and in the age of full-hd phones.
To be honest, I doubt that art style would look very good in 3D anyway. I don't mind.
Why can't they produce a full 3D PC version in, say, the cry engine...

"That trading aspect was also to promote communication between people, and really, you need the handheld to be able to go places in real life, meet people, easily trade and battle with them. I think that's the reason we designed them on the handheld; it's really important to Pokemon."
I'm glad the 3d is nothing but a pain in the ass.
"That's one of the reasons why we wanted to leave it off in the overworld, because it gives us more power to show off more beautiful graphics."
Fair enough I would too choose better quality over a shitty system feature.
Why can't they produce a full 3D PC version in, say, the cry engine...
I bet you couldn't even count the polygons on my Porygon Wait
Why can't they produce a full 3D PC version in, say, the cry engine...
They know that if they did that stock markets would crash and the world would go into disarray as literally everyone in the world spends every waking moment playing it.
That's fine by me, in fact I support it. Rendering only one viewpoint instead of two must free up a lot of processing time for more stuff on-screen. It's nice though that 3D is staying in battles. It doesn't look like the quality of the Pokemon models has been compromised at all to keep the 3D, and if it's anything I would want to see in a 3D Pokemon game, it's the Pokemon.
That's fine by me, in fact I support it. There's an overlay in the top screen that, when switched on, steers the light from different parts of the screen to the right eye.

Otherwise there's no illusion of 3D. It would be like having one of those "magic card" things but it's the same image from every angle.

You need to direct 2 images rendered at slightly different angles, one to each eye. With 3D off you just need to render one image which takes less power to process, even if that image is twice as wide.
so are they doing anything more with the overworld or is it the same as all the other pokeman overworlds but slightly shinier You know, walking around and seeing pokemans actually doing stuff. That would be cool.

There's most likely going to be more because they're keeping many things a secret, but so far you can ride Pokemon and sit on benches and chairs and shit. Other than that, we don't know a lot.
Good time to decide this, what with that new shiny 2DS being released on the day X and Y are, for enough of a discount to buy either of those games with. :v:
Is it just me, or in this day and age is the 3DS just rather last-generation (PSP-esque) when it comes to visuals? It was less apparent with the regular DS due to sprite-based games looking the best they could on the hardware, but games on even mid-end mobile phones and tablets look like this nowadays. [t]http://www.androidrundown.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/RealRacing3-9.png[/t] I just feel like the PS Vita or even mobile phones with hardware controls would be a lot more pleasant platform to play Pokemon on, having easier to read UIs, polished touch interfaces and the hardware to easily expand artistically past what's possible with the 3DS.

Nintendo has always been about the software and not the hardware.
Ok and? Nintendo has always been about the software and not the hardware.
I know that very well. However, even for a company focusing more on software than hardware, the 3DS seems to suffer creatively from having only marginally-better-than-last-gen hardware that can only render a certain amount of things at a time. Some might say visuals don't matter, but you can only do so much with marginal 3D graphics on a 400x240 screen. At that resolution, even seeing things at a reasonable distance is difficult.

Really, you don't need high-end hardware to make a game look good or run good. The 3DS is fine.

I never use 3D, it never really works for me and my arms get tired holding it at funny angles.
I haven't bought a pokemon game since soul silver (which was mostly for nostalgia purposes) but this looks nice
I go cross eyed and my eyes start watering profusely if the 3D is turned on even a little so I couldn't care less...
Omg no I love 3d this is sad :(
Nintendo finally admitted that 3D is a flop when they released the 2DS, so this isn't surprising. I find it funny that the whole 3D craze has now died twice.
