Hello,
I have a custom built computer in my room which I've had for about a year. Everything has always run flawlessly. Last night, the smell of something burning, almost plasticy it seemed, woke me up. I immediately realized it was my computer, so I turned it off and went back to bed. When I woke up this morning, I powered up my computer only to have it not start at all. There's a light on the motherboad and the card reader that is on, and all of my external drives are on, but whenever I press the power button nothing happens. Only after every 5 minutes does the computer boot up for about a half a second can I get it to power on. I can tell because the blue lights turn on in the inside of my case (I have LED lighting on the inside) but they are only on for a very short period of time. I've tried plugging the power cord into a different source and cleaning the inside of my computer with compressed air, but with no avail. If anyone has anything to contribute which could potentially solve my problem, it would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and also, here are my PC's specs:
Core i7 920 Intel Processor @ 2.66 GHz
6 GB DDR3 RAM
GTX 260
1 TB Green Caviar HD
Thanks
Sounds like a fried PSU. Most likely gonna have to buy a new one.
It could have taken other parts with it.
Why would anyone let a computer run overnight if you're not using it? Uses power and you have a chance of frying it
Hate people that don't even wait one minute for an answer, and just leaves instead... :argh:

TF2 idling
Definitely a PSU related problem.
What makes it more likely than not to be a PSU problem? Are there certain symptoms which are a dead give away to a malfunctioning PSU?
The thing that all smelled burned is a pretty clear sign of what happened.
try another PSU
ask a mate if you can borrow his

Number of reason. Downloading a large file, overnight virus scan, or simply falling asleep. My computer has been on for the pass 3-4 days. I gave it little rest this morning.
Same thing happened to me, the PSU is dead.
You fried your PSU, This could either you need better cooling, Or a better PSU that gives higher output: You PC might have pulled a power spike because for example, High processor and GPU use and that probably fried it.

The computer I am on right now has been running non stop for 504+ Hours.
Works fine. stays on while I sleep. Runs at same speed as I left it when I return, sometimes it gets buggy, but then I restart.
because nobody asked i will ask it: IS IT PLUGGED IN!?
if it is it can be a fried power supply (PSU) you can buy a cheap one for 30 dollars. but if you need a lot of power (like me) it will cost you around 100 dollars. i can give you my old psu if you want (it still works fine):
it's a Z400-08FC and has a peak of 400W.
i will give it to you for free if you pay for the shipping.
Never get a cheap PSU. Always get a good quality PSU to avoid these situations. The PSU Mega1mpact suggested is crap.

i know, but it's the psu that came with my case... it's good enough if you have a pc that doesn't need that much power.
and i wanted to gave it away for free :D

What about not trying to fry it twice.
maybe the psu is not broken at all. on 99.99% of all motherboards and on 80% of all psu's there is a power indicator light. if it's on it's not your psu that is causing the problem.
