Honestly, it just seems like a reskin. Unless they make aliens different from barbarians, I don't really see a huge difference. I do like the land danger mechanic, however. It promotes you to actually think about your moves instead of setting your units on auto-explore/work and never worrying about them again.
it'll be interesting to see how they handle Planet I guess. That was one of my favorite aspects of AC.

They stated in a previous interview that it's going to be super upbeat and completely avoid the dark story and setting that Alpha Centauri had. The 'struggle for survival' isn't going to be about choosing the lesser evil, it's going to be about pushing humanity forward. Which is okay and everything, but I'm going to miss the atmosphere from Alpha Centauri.

There's probably not going to be anything like boreholes. Remember they've started to do away with some of the systems you have to actually think about to keep balanced, like pollution or health. I wouldn't doubt that even Supremacy civs will at most make mines and quarries.
