The U.S. government has been secretly collecting emails, chats and other personal information about foreigners from companies including Facebook, Google and Apple, officials admit.
The secret program, revealed at first by the Washington Post and the Guardian newspapers, said the FBI and the National Security Agency can scour data including emails, chats, stored files, video and audio to help analysts track a person's movements and contacts.
Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube and Apple are all said to be part of the program —known as Prism. Most have denied giving the government access to their data.
Late Thursday, James Clapper, U.S. director of national intelligence, confirmed the existence of Prism and another recently revealed surveillance program — under which Verizon handed over the phone records of U.S. customers — in an effort to tamp down the public uproar.
Clapper denounced the leaks, insisting both programs were legal and necessary for U.S. security, even as he took the rare step of declassifying and releasing key details.
“The unauthorized disclosure of a top secret U.S. court document threatens potentially long-lasting and irreversible harm to our ability to identify and respond to the many threats facing our nation," he said.
"I believe it is important for the American people to understand the limits of this targeted counterterrorism program and the principles that govern its use," Clapper added.
Terrorists, every single one of you.
If I didn't live in such a small city I'd start protesting or something, people in big cities need to organize NOW.

I am completely fine with this. I love my government! My government is great and nothing is wrong with it. I am a citizen who loves their country, the magnificent US of A.

The main problem is that one company decides all the news that's reported. The AP can decide wither or not a protest is worth mentioning if they so see fit since every broadcaster and news center gets the news straight from them.
when are you guys going to have a revolution or something

Who gives a fuck, people need to assemble, legally. This shit is unacceptable, you don't protest to get on the news. You protest to get a message across.
The "Prism" program.
Jesus fuck, it sounds like a government secret from a thriller movie.
when are you guys going to have a revolution or something
Why are you speaking as if you aren't American?
Annnd nothing will happen because people are so apathetic to shit like this.
Or they actually believe that this kind of massive surveilance is necessary
There's 310 Million of us
The average teenager sends 60 texts a day
Good luck
Counter terrorism and national security are the biggest cop outs for shit like this. It needs to stop.

We all know what happened last time americans took to the streets over a legitimate issue.
Why are you guys so against this? If they can help prevent thousands of people dying in a terror attack then surely its worth it, i doubt the government really care that you secretly like mlp porn or w/e as long as you're not a terrorist.

So is that a reason to completely give up hope? Hopelessness is for the helpless.

Because I do not want to be labeled as a potential terrorist simply because my emails contain a few words that are picked up as 'suspicious' by their massive data profiling system. I want to be able to live a peaceful life where I can have my privacy where it should be. I want to be able to have a conversation with someone else over the internet without having to watch my words.

Because it's unconstitutional? The government has no right to invade the privacy of citizens (without any warrant) on such a massive scale.

It doesn't matter whether or not you have anything to hide, this country became so great because of the rights they grant to citizens, this practice pretty much makes it all smoke. This is by far the most hypocritical thing the government is pulling off as of recent.
'Welcome to America where your speech is free and you have a right to privacy. By the way we're looking up your facebook wallposts.'

I take it you don't lock the door when you go to the bathroom? You've got nothing to hide, right?
This is absolutely atrocious. Going to buy a Year long VPN at a legitimate site, where they DONT hand over information to authorities, government, etc. Then just gonna go stealth.

The main idea revolves around utopia and dystopia. In the real world, pure utopias, areas free of conflict and full of safety, are nigh impossible to produce, and usually end up as dystopias that were paved with good intentions.
Having the government spy on your personal belongings(emails, pictures, etc.), is done with the intention of creating safety, but it still scares people because it brings up a starting point for a modern dystopia as seen in classic novels like Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Hey man, it just takes one to start. Cut out the bottom of an old shoe box, tape it to a ruler, and take the streets with your makeshift picket sign.
